Whitehall Police Department Weekly Report: May 22–27

Alarm Installation Mistaken for Suspicious Activity – May 22
At 11:00 p.m., a concerned citizen reported a van parked near a bank with its door open and no one in sight. The officer found that the van belonged to workers inside the bank installing new alarm hardware. After confirming their identities, no further action was needed.

Mental Health Transport and Low Blood Sugar – May 23
At 5:15 a.m., police responded to Colby Street where a man admitted using drugs and alcohol and was having suicidal thoughts. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
At 7:43 a.m., officers also assisted a man seen stumbling on Mears Avenue. He believed low blood sugar caused his unsteadiness. He declined medical help and said he was getting food. Later, police linked trash found in a nearby yard to him and confirmed it was cleaned up.

Crash at Colby St and Hit-and-Run Reported – May 23
At 1:59 p.m., a Rothbury man caused a two-car crash on Colby Street by failing to stay in the proper lane while turning. Both vehicles were towed, but no citations were issued.
At 4:21 p.m., a man reported a hit-and-run he caused earlier that morning when he hit a car in a work parking lot. He left because he was late but later tried locating the vehicle owner by email. The case remains open.

Driver Crashes into Fence at Howmet Park – May 24
At 11:43 a.m., a 92-year-old driver crashed into a fence at Howmet Park. Her foot slipped from the brake onto the gas pedal. The White Lake Fire Authority helped remove the vehicle. Damage to the fence was significant.

Child Medication Dispute and Mental Health Crisis – May 25–26
On May 25 at 5:43 p.m., police responded to a family issue on Colby Street. A man reported that his girlfriend left their baby with a neighbor who gave the child medication. Although the hospital said the child was fine, the man requested CPS involvement. Officers found the mother and child in good health.
On May 26 at 4:50 a.m., officers helped a woman in crisis on Slocum Street. She admitted taking pills after drinking and having a family argument. She agreed to go to the hospital for help.

Vehicles Damaged by Mower and Fishing Complaint – May 26
A man reported two dents in his parked truck on E Colby Street. An officer determined the damage came from rocks kicked up by a lawnmower nearby. Another vehicle was also damaged.
At 7:52 p.m., youth were warned for fishing at the municipal marina, where it’s prohibited. A caller wanted harsher punishment, but the officer opted to educate the boys.

Reckless Motorcycle Reported – May 26
Police responded to a report of a reckless motorcycle on Lewis Street at 11:53 p.m. Two people denied involvement at first but later admitted to it. They claimed the bike just sounded fast. The officer issued a warning and stayed in the area briefly.

Student Cited for Vape and Officer Assists at Doctor Visit – May 27
A 16-year-old was cited for MIP of a vape at 12:01 p.m. after school staff confronted the student based on a tip. The student claimed to be holding it for someone else.
At 1:28 p.m., a mother called for help getting her 7-year-old into a doctor’s office. The officer carried the child inside, and he agreed to stay. No further issues were reported.

Family Disturbance After Loss – May 27
Police and Montague officers responded to a reported disturbance on Johannah Street at 11:22 p.m. They found a man in a car outside his home. His son reported the father hadn’t come inside. The 51-year-old man shared he was struggling with his wife’s recent death and the effects of cannabis use. CPS and HealthWest were notified, and the child was placed with a relative.

A Farewell Message from the Whitehall PD
This week’s update includes a note from longtime press release writer Roger, who is retiring on May 31.
Roger wrote, “I’ve enjoyed sharing the stories of our officers and hope you’ve found value, understanding, and maybe even a few laughs in them. It’s been my honor to serve this community, and now, it’s time to enjoy a quieter chapter.”
