Dispensaries Deliver Economic and Community Boost to Whitehall

WHITEHALL — Cannabis dispensaries, including The Woods and New Standard, have transformed Whitehall’s business landscape, revitalizing vacant storefronts and contributing to the local economy. These businesses have created jobs, increased foot traffic to nearby establishments, and generated tax revenue that has directly benefited community infrastructure and services.

Economic Impact of Dispensaries

City Manager Scott Huebler highlighted the economic impact of these businesses, stating, “The obvious is that we’ve got two formerly vacant storefronts that are operating as businesses. That’s a plus. It’s a nice little boost to the economy.” The financial benefits extend beyond the dispensaries themselves, with cannabis tax revenue helping to fund public improvements. “The City Council sent $90,000 for sidewalks, $20,000 for police department equipment, and $6,000 toward streets, enhancing public safety and walkability.”

Huebler pointed to broader infrastructure benefits, explaining, “We’ve extended the sewer system to accommodate these businesses, benefiting other nearby establishments as well.”

Public Safety and Security Measures

Public safety has also been a key factor in the dispensaries’ integration into the community. Whitehall Police Lieutenant Detective Brandon Mahoney praised their security measures: “We had a break-in, and thanks to their excellent security and camera systems, we were able to resolve it quickly. They’ve been great business partners and haven’t been a burden on us at all.”

The Woods Operating Manager Andrew Keiswetter echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the business’s commitment to compliance and security. “Preventing underage sales is a top priority. We have a three-part ID verification process, including visual checks, black light authentication, and an advanced scanner to detect fake IDs. Our staff undergoes thorough ID training and monitoring to maintain compliance.”

Ensuring Product Safety and Compliance

With product safety remaining a top priority, The Woods ensures all offerings meet strict state CRA guidelines. “We don’t produce our own products; we’re a wholesaler’s retail operation. Every product is inspected before going on sale to ensure it meets our quality standards,” Keiswetter explained.

Community Engagement and Local Partnerships

Beyond safety and regulation, The Woods has played an active role in the community. Keiswetter described Whitehall as an ideal location, stating, “It’s a beautiful and welcoming town that attracts visitors, which directly benefits The Woods. We employ between 9 to 12 staff members, many of whom live locally, and our presence has increased foot traffic to businesses like Biggby Coffee and Shell.”

The dispensary has also forged strong partnerships with other local businesses. “We’ve collaborated with Fetch on a custom beer and with Gnarly Heifer on a signature burger, both of which helped promote Whitehall businesses alongside our own. We’re always looking for more ways to partner locally,” Keiswetter added.

Cannabis Tourism and Increased Visitor Traffic

Cannabis tourism has also contributed to Whitehall’s economy, particularly during events like the Electric Forest festival. “We definitely see an increase during festivals. It’s noticeable, and businesses nearby see more regular visitors because of it,” Mahoney noted.

Future Plans and Expansion Considerations

Looking ahead, The Woods has considered expanding its services. Keiswetter shared, “The city has approved a drive-through window for us, which we’ve yet to implement. We think it would be a great convenience—imagine picking up your coffee from Biggby and then driving through The Woods for your order. But beyond that, we don’t plan to expand in the immediate area.”

The Role of Dispensaries in Whitehall’s Growth

With strong city support, responsible business practices, and a focus on community involvement, dispensaries like The Woods and New Standard continue to play a key role in Whitehall’s economic and social growth.
