I had a good buddy try to convince me to get into turkey hunting a long time ago. It took him a couple of years, but I was fortunate that he was persistent. I finally agreed to give it a try, thinking, “This is a one-and-done thing for me.” I mean, I loved deer hunting, and the idea of shooting a turkey just didn’t compare to the adrenaline rush of harvesting a nice buck.
Well, decades later…I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Why Turkey Hunting?
Turkey hunting is one of the most exciting and challenging outdoor pursuits. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or just starting out, the thrill of hearing that first gobble and the strategy involved will hook you quickly.
1. The Challenge
Turkeys are high-strung and alert with incredibly sharp senses. Their eyesight and hearing make them tough targets, pushing your calling skills, stealth, and patience to the limit.
2. The Gobble and Call
There’s nothing quite like the sound of a Tom gobbling in response to your call. That back-and-forth interaction is as thrilling as it gets in the spring woods.
3. Spring Awakening
Spring is the season of rebirth in the woods. It’s beautiful, full of sound and color, and turkey hunting gives you a reason to experience it up close—often before the sun even rises.
4. A Social Tradition
From father-son hunts to friends doubling up on birds, turkey hunting has become a spring ritual. Over the years, I’ve made great memories with my dad, uncle, cousin, and now my son Michael—my go-to hunting partner.
5. Turkey Treat?
While wild turkey meat can be a bit of a love-it-or-leave-it topic, with the right preparation—grilled, smoked, or roasted—it can be downright delicious.
