In Montague, the Student Senate isn’t just a governing body; it’s a pillar of student leadership and community engagement. Representing the voices, concerns, and aspirations of Montague High School students, the Senate plays a pivotal role in shaping the student experience. More than just advocates, these students are leaders of the younger generation in this close-knit town. Here’s a closer look at Montague High School’s Student Senate and the dedicated individuals who make it all happen.

The Student Senate operates with a guiding mission: to amplify student voices and ensure their concerns reach school administration. In a conversation with Maizie Collins, the Senate’s Vice President, and Bucky Aney, its President, they emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. “Our mission,” they said, “is to make sure every student feels valued and represented.”

Both Maizie and Bucky exemplify what it means to be well-rounded student leaders. As student-athletes, they bring unique perspectives to the Senate: Maizie is a key player on the school’s volleyball team, while Bucky competes with Montague’s cross-country team. Their leadership isn’t just limited to athletics; they’re passionate about making a tangible impact within their school community.

Reflecting on recent and upcoming events, Maizie and Bucky highlighted the Senate’s recent homecoming event and a forthcoming blood drive as some of the year’s biggest initiatives. These events, along with others throughout the school year, are the result of dedicated planning and teamwork within the Senate. “It’s really like a team,” Maizie shared, describing the Senate’s collaborative spirit. “It’s fun to be a part of it and to be reliable for everyone.”

Bucky added his perspective on leadership, noting the importance of sharing responsibility: “I’ve tried to do too much myself in the past,” he admitted. “This year, I’m stepping back and encouraging others to share their ideas.” His insight reflects a growth-oriented approach to leadership, one that values input from all members and fosters a culture of mutual respect and support.

Getting involved in the Senate is highly competitive, with the entire school voting for representatives. The rising interest among students highlights the organization’s impact and the value it brings to Montague High School. “I definitely see a lot more participation…It’s becoming something more competitive.”

The Student Senate’s efforts are undeniable. From organizing blood drives to managing school-wide events and assemblies, this group’s influence is felt across the school. Their commitment to improving Montague High School drives them forward and leaves a lasting impact on the school community. Through their work, the Senate is shaping a positive, inclusive future for all students.
