A three-car chain reaction crash occurred at 2:58 p.m. in the 100 block of S Mears Ave. All vehicles were traveling north when the first stopped, the second followed, but the third failed to see the stopped traffic and caused the collision. The first vehicle was driven by a 45-year-old Rothbury woman, the second by an 18-year-old Montague man, and the third by a 23-year-old Freeport, IL, man. The third driver was cited for careless driving, no insurance, and an expired registration. No injuries were reported.
A resident of the 400 block of Muskegon Ave reported harassment by an ex-boyfriend. The woman, who shares two children with the man, stated she could not take them to him for a visit. The man, living in Norton Shores, sent multiple texts accusing her of child abuse. The caller was concerned about a custody dispute. No further action was taken.
March 13
Whitehall Police responded to an unwanted person complaint at 2:05 p.m. in the 1200 block of Colby St. A man reported that his father, who had delivered groceries earlier, had returned, but he no longer wanted him there. The officer relayed the message and returned the groceries to the caller. No further action was taken.
March 15
A resident of the 900 block of Division St reported a scam phone call. The caller, claiming to be from the sheriff’s office, said there was a warrant for the resident’s arrest for missing jury duty. The resident became suspicious when the caller struggled to pronounce “Muskegon” and hung up. An officer confirmed that no warrant existed.
An officer on patrol at 5:10 p.m. conducted a routine license plate check in the 3000 block of Colby St. The registered owner had a suspended license. The driver, a 59-year-old Dalton Township man, was cited for DWLS. A family member arrived to drive the vehicle away.
March 16
A 20-year-old Whitehall man was arrested for OWI following a crash at 7:53 a.m. in the 900 block of Lake St. A resident discovered a pickup had struck his legally parked car and found the driver unresponsive. The driver later told the officer he had stopped to sleep but was unaware he had hit another vehicle. Sobriety tests confirmed impairment, and a breath test at the Muskegon County Jail showed he was well over the legal limit. Montague Police assisted.
Whitehall Police responded at 10:18 p.m. to a suspicious situation in the 300 block of Division St. A caller reported a dark van outside their residence. Officers located the van in the 200 block of Colby St. The driver explained he was meeting a woman he had connected with online. No further action was taken.
March 17
A 33-year-old Muskegon man was arrested for domestic assault at 10:17 a.m. in the 1100 block of Colby St. The victim reported she confronted her boyfriend, who was sleeping on her couch after a night of drinking, and asked him to leave. An argument ensued, during which he pushed her against a wall and struck her. Officers found him in a downstairs apartment and arrested him. He was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail.
Whitehall Police responded to a family dispute at 12:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Lincoln St. A couple argued over an online dispute. No physical assault occurred. Officers suggested they separate temporarily. No further action was taken.
At 2:40 p.m., an officer responded to a complaint of dog waste in the 1200 block of Colby St. A resident reported that a neighbor was not cleaning up after their dog. The officer attempted to contact the neighbor but received no answer. The complainant was advised to contact building management.
March 18
At 6:32 p.m., an officer on patrol noticed a piece of furniture left in a yard in the 300 block of Baldwin St. The resident stated that the trash service had not picked it up. After being warned to remove it, the officer later checked back and confirmed it had been cleared.
A 16-year-old high school student was cited for MIP Vape at 11:30 a.m. The SRO was called when a handheld metal detector detected something in the student’s pocket. The student initially denied having anything but later surrendered a vape device.
A middle school staff member reported a student acting suspiciously. The student, a 13-year-old, was called to the office and turned over a vape device. The SRO issued a citation for MIP Vape and contacted the parents.
