Community Collaboration and Growth Take Center Stage at Montague Township Council Meeting

MONTAGUE, MI — April 8, 2025 — The Montague Township Board gathered Tuesday evening for a packed agenda filled with community-driven initiatives, recreational opportunities, infrastructure updates, and financial planning, all pointing toward a vibrant and collaborative summer ahead.

Agenda and Minutes Approved Without Issue

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call, the board approved the evening’s agenda and the minutes from the March 11, 2025, meeting with unanimous support.

Volunteer Network Presented by CatchMark Technologies

Kara Raeth of CatchMark Technologies introduced the “SportsNuts” and “NewsNuts” volunteer networks, aimed at enhancing local storytelling and community coverage. The platforms offer volunteers passes, branded gear, and a chance to contribute to regional sports and event coverage.

Exploring Options for Senior Millage Funds

Discussion continued regarding unspent senior millage funds from 2022. Ideas included transportation support and meal programs, with additional research planned into regional services like those offered in Whitehall. A community information board was also suggested.

Adult Soccer League Proposal Sparks Extensive Dialogue

A large portion of the meeting focused on a proposed adult summer soccer league. Organizers pitched a flexible, small-sided league designed for fun and fitness. Concerns were raised regarding field usage, potential profit motives, and impact on the youth program managed by White Lake Youth Sports.

While initial concerns surfaced about field wear, scheduling conflicts, and insurance, a spirit of collaboration prevailed. The board ultimately granted a one-year trial, permitting limited use of the softball outfield for games. The league will be capped at 18 teams, with a schedule limited to three nights per week and three games per night.

Organizers agreed to coordinate closely with township maintenance and youth sports leaders to ensure respectful shared use of the facilities.

Forestry, Roads, and Field Expansion

The board received updates on ongoing tree harvesting at Clear Springs and a future project scheduled for Skeels in early June. The project, already generating revenue, may eventually support park upgrades.

Maintenance updates included:

  • Plans to prioritize Harris and Oaks roads for brining
  • Potential gravel improvements to Trading Post Road
  • Discussion of deteriorating road edges on Sikkenga Road

A motion was made to explore grant opportunities using forestry revenue to enhance the soccer complex—ideas included additional field space, more parking, and even a new play structure.

Election and Insurance Updates

Montague Township is gearing up for a May 6 election tied to the Muskegon County Museum millage. Clerk Drew Roesler noted that ballots are out and early voting has begun.

Additionally, the board is reviewing insurance options with VHS Insurance, with proposals expected before the current policy expires in June.

Fireworks Donation and Legal Compliance

The board voted unanimously to contribute $500 toward the White Lake fireworks show scheduled for July 4. Legal counsel confirmed the expenditure aligns with state law.

Board and Department Reports

  • Fire Department: Roof work completed; overall operations stable.
  • Solid Waste: Coupon day scheduled for April 19.
  • Ambulance Authority: Budget increases by $25,000; funding remains strong.
  • Planning Commission: Approved Northern Lights site plan; eyeing master plan revisions and blight solutions.
