Craig Smith is not just a name in Montague; he is a force of nature. Whether coaching young athletes, running a thriving local business, serving as a pastor, or fostering a spirit of giving through community initiatives, Craig wears many hats—each with passion and purpose. His story is one of deep roots, faith, and an unwavering commitment to making Montague a better place.
A Legacy in Montague
Craig’s story begins in Montague, where his family has lived since the 1880s. Raised on a farm, his upbringing instilled in him a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for community values. His father, a farmer and former principal at Oceana High School, and his mother, who worked alongside him, played instrumental roles in shaping Craig’s values. While he spent his early childhood in Detroit, the family’s return to the farm reinforced his connection to Montague’s rich heritage.
From Landscape Architect to Educator
Craig’s journey took him to Lansing, where he initially pursued landscape architecture at Lansing Community College. However, the shift from hand-drawn plans to computer-aided design led him to reconsider his path. He then moved to Chicago to attend North Park University, where he played Division III football and earned a teaching degree. While in Chicago, he met his wife, Michelle Barone Smith, and together, they built a life that balanced education, music, and faith.
Returning Home: A Leap of Faith
The pull of Montague remained strong, and after years of city life, Craig and his family made the move back. In a twist of fate, he became the youth pastor at the church he grew up attending. He had long prayed for a greater purpose, and his return to Montague was the answer to that prayer.
A Life of Service: Coaching and Community Leadership
Craig has dedicated over 30 years to coaching middle school basketball and high school football. His coaching philosophy extends beyond the game—instilling values of discipline, respect, and character in his players. From teaching fundamentals in basketball to shaping leaders on the football field, he ensures that young athletes carry lessons far beyond their sports careers.
His commitment to youth development doesn’t end with athletics. As a pastor at ECC, Craig spearheads numerous community outreach programs, including:
- God’s Garage – Providing free car repairs for single mothers and elderly residents.
- Base Camp – Organizing volunteers to maintain local schools and parks.
- Work Camp – Mobilizing teams to renovate homes for those in need.
- Echo Mentoring – Supporting foster care initiatives and helping children find safe homes.
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Owning an Ice Cream Shop
Craig and his family took a leap of faith when they purchased a local ice cream shop, Twisters Ice Cream, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite uncertainties, the business flourished under their leadership. His daughter, Maddie, runs daily operations, creating viral social media content that has attracted customers from across Michigan. The shop’s success is a testament to their dedication and the unwavering support of the Montague community.
A Passion for Music
While many recognize Craig for his contributions to sports and ministry, his love for music is another defining aspect of his life. A self-taught guitarist, he immersed himself in blues and folk music during his time in Chicago, even playing at renowned venues like Buddy Guy’s Legends. Today, he continues to perform, using his music as a bridge to connect with people beyond church walls.
Faith in Action
As the Pastor of Worship and Community at Whitehall Evangelical Covenant Church, Craig is deeply involved in faith-based initiatives. He believes in taking ministry beyond the church—bringing services to rescue missions, hosting Men’s Ministry gatherings at local venues, and engaging with the broader community in meaningful ways.
A Life Well-Lived
Craig Smith’s story is one of relentless dedication to his community. Whether through coaching, mentoring, running a business, or leading faith-based initiatives, he continuously seeks ways to uplift those around him. His life exemplifies the power of faith, service, and a deep love for the place he calls home.
Montague is fortunate to have someone like Craig—a man who not only wears many hats but wears them with purpose, passion, and an unshakable commitment to his community.
Craig and Michelle are proud parents of four children—Hannah, Maddie, Sam, and their youngest, Lauren—who have all played integral roles in their family’s journey and continue to contribute to the Montague community.
