Knights of Columbus @ St. James 2025 Lenten Fish Fry: A Tradition of Service and Community

The Knights of Columbus at St. James Catholic Church in Montague are once again hosting their beloved Lenten Fish Fry, a long-standing tradition that brings together faith, fellowship, and fantastic food. Running every Friday from February 28 to April 11, 2025, this event is more than just a meal—it’s a community-driven effort that supports numerous local charities and causes.

A Fish Fry with a Mission

Each year, the Knights of Columbus dedicate their time and resources to providing delicious fish dinners while raising funds for important community programs. Proceeds from the fish fry help support initiatives such as the White Lake Area Giving Tree, local food pantries, pregnancy services, and Catholic youth programs. This dedication to service underscores the deeper purpose behind the event: giving back to those in need while bringing people together.

First Responders Dinner Deal

Each year, the Knights of Columbus offer a special discount dinner for Armed Forces members, Veterans, and Police, Firefighters, and Emergency First Responders on the first Friday of the Fish Fry season. This year, the tradition continued with over 88 first responders attending. The program has grown significantly, increasing from 60 participants in the previous year, demonstrating the community’s appreciation for these dedicated individuals.

“It’s important to us to give back to those who serve our community every day,” said Tom Bart, the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry Leader. “We love seeing them come in, enjoy a meal, and know that they are appreciated.”

Behind the Scenes: Volunteers Make it Happen

The fish fry is powered by a dedicated group of volunteers who handle everything from preparing desserts and setting up tables to breading fish and serving meals. Community members—young and old—are encouraged to lend a hand, whether by helping with Thursday meal prep, Friday cooking, or post-event cleanup. Those interested in volunteering can reach out to [email protected].

“The volunteers are like the swallows returning to Capistrano,” said Tom Bart. “They come back every year, ready to take their spots and keep this tradition alive.”

A Community Staple with a Bright Future

This event is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a time-honored tradition that continues to grow. Many families have volunteered for generations, passing down their roles to younger members. Even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Knights adapted by implementing online ordering and an efficient drive-through system, ensuring the tradition remained strong.

“The first couple of weeks are always a little chaotic, getting back into the swing of things, but by the third week, it runs like a well-oiled machine,” said Tom Bart.

Attendees often return year after year, not just for the great food but for the sense of camaraderie and connection it fosters. Whether it’s gathering with friends over a meal, watching young volunteers proudly serve meals, or simply taking part in a long-standing community tradition, the Lenten Fish Fry at St. James Catholic Parish is an event that brings people together in the spirit of faith and generosity.

“It’s amazing how people come out in full force,” Bart said. “You see familiar faces, and even if there’s a wait, everyone’s chatting, catching up, and enjoying the atmosphere.”
