Montague DECA: Empowering Students Through Business and Community Involvement

Montague DECA, a standout organization in West Michigan, offers students a unique opportunity to develop business skills, leadership, and community engagement. Similar to organizations like FFA, DECA focuses on competitions and group projects, but with a distinct emphasis on business and entrepreneurship.

A Unique Chapter in West Michigan

DECA isn’t widespread in the region, with Fruitport being the only other local school offering a chapter. Montague DECA provides a critical platform for students interested in business, marketing, and entrepreneurship. As Santiago Perales and Emalee McGee explain, the program sets itself apart by equipping students with skills they can carry into their future careers.

Skills Development Through Competitions and Projects

Montague DECA offers two primary competition formats: roleplays and written projects. Roleplays challenge students to solve real-world business problems, often under tight time constraints, before presenting their solutions to judges. Written projects, like Santiago and Emalee’s Chapter Awards submission, involve in-depth research and planning over several months, focusing on DECA’s contributions to the school and community.

These activities teach valuable skills, such as public speaking, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Santiago emphasizes that DECA helps build confidence in speaking with others and presenting ideas, while Emalee highlights the program’s focus on leadership and teamwork.

Recognition’s and Achievements

Montague DECA members have consistently excelled in competitions, with many advancing from districts to the state level in Detroit. Exceptional students, such as Charlotte Stewart, have even earned “DECA Glass” by winning their categories and advancing to the national level.

Community Connections

Montague DECA maintains a strong connection with the community. Members collaborate with local businesses to identify and solve challenges, contributing innovative ideas and solutions. The chapter also organizes events like the sale of “Pink Out” shirts for Whitehall football games, school store sales, and Market Day, where students create and market products in a mini-business environment.

A Culture of Empowerment

When asked to describe DECA in three words, Santiago and Emalee chose “empowering,” “encouraging,” and “active.” These words reflect the program’s impact on its members and the community. DECA empowers students to develop confidence and leadership, encourages collaboration and mentorship, and keeps members actively engaged in their projects and community.

Looking Ahead

Montague DECA is focused on expanding its reach to younger students, such as freshmen and sophomores, to grow its chapter and foster a new generation of leaders. By offering hands-on experiences and fostering a supportive environment, Montague DECA ensures that its members are prepared to succeed in both business and life.

For students seeking a program that combines education, leadership, and community service, Montague DECA offers a transformative experience that leaves a lasting impact. As Santiago and Emalee expressed, DECA is more than just a club—it’s a gateway to empowerment, growth, and success.
