Montague FFA Recycles Christmas Trees for Local Goats

Montague High School’s FFA Chapter is bringing sustainability and community spirit to the holiday season with their annual Christmas tree recycling program. Located in West Michigan, the Montague FFA members encourage residents to drop off their used Christmas trees at the east side of the school’s FFA barn between December 26 and January 10. This program not only provides a convenient way for the community to dispose of their trees but also helps feed local goats.

The tradition started after FFA advisor Kate Feuerstein toured a student’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) at a Christmas tree farm. The farm owner shared how leftover trees and wreaths were repurposed as food for goats, who enjoy munching on the branches. Inspired by this, Feuerstein and the Montague FFA officer team launched their own collection initiative.

Residents are reminded to remove all lights, tinsel, and ornaments before dropping off their trees. Once collected, the trees are delivered to local farms, providing nutritious snacks for the goats and contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.

This program has grown into a cherished annual event for the Montague FFA Chapter.

The Montague FFA Chapter exemplifies how small, creative initiatives can have a big impact. By recycling Christmas trees, they’re helping the environment, supporting local farms, and fostering connections within their community.
