Montague High School’s marching band is a dynamic blend of music, movement, and camaraderie. Under the leadership of Band Director Emma Greenwood, this team is about much more than just playing music—it’s about building traditions, creating memories, and engaging with the community.
A quick visit to their Facebook page gives a glimpse into the band’s dedication and spirit. Their page highlights everything from spirited rehearsals to high-energy performances at local parades, competitions, and school events, showing how this group has become an integral part of Montague’s school spirit and pride.
The Power of Performance and Teamwork
For Montague’s marching band members, every performance is the result of hours of hard work and coordination. Students like trumpet player Eli Hysell and baritone player Grace Torsch share a passion for not only the music but also the traditions that make the band experience unique. Grace explains how her low brass section kicks off each performance by gathering in a circle, chanting, “Low brass kicks brass,” before walking to the field with focused energy. This ritual pumps them up and solidifies their bond.
The band’s preparation isn’t just about music; it’s about perfecting everything from form and rhythm to energy and spirit. As Eli puts it, “In symphonic band, you focus on notes, tempo, and articulation. But in marching band, you’re moving in tempo, holding form, guiding, and hitting your spot exactly on time.” The challenge is intense, but it’s this precision that makes their performances unforgettable.
Creating Connections Through Tradition
Beyond the music, the band’s pre-game traditions add depth to their experience. Grace describes how low brass has a long-standing tradition of group chants, while the trumpet section has begun holding a pre-game prayer circle, a moment of reflection and gratitude that brings them together before each performance.
These traditions not only create a fun and unique identity for each section but also reinforce the bond among members. “It’s a nice way to reflect and be thankful before you go into a marching band competition,” says Grace, emphasizing how these moments make each performance feel special.
A Part of the Community
The band’s dedication extends beyond the school. Through local parades, community concerts, and competitions, Montague’s marching band shows the pride they have in both their school and town. Their performances bring the community together, embodying Montague’s values and providing entertainment for all.
Their Facebook page is filled with highlights from recent events and showcases the students’ hard work, community involvement, and sense of pride.
Keeping the Beat
Through music, tradition, and teamwork, Montague High’s marching band is building an enduring legacy of school pride. Whether they’re marching in a parade, competing on the field, or celebrating with their unique chants and traditions, the band’s members are creating unforgettable memories and inspiring others to join in the spirit.
Montague High School’s marching band is a true testament to the power of music and teamwork, enriching the community with every note and every step.
