A Fresh Perspective: Emily Fullmer’s First Impressions
The Montague Area Public Schools Board of Education welcomed its newest member, Emily Fullmer, during the January 13, 2025, meeting. After taking the oath of office, Fullmer participated actively in her first session, bringing a fresh outlook to the board’s discussions. Reflecting on her initial experience, Fullmer remarked, “Everything was pretty cut and dry and straightforward. I’m happy with how the meeting went.”
Fullmer explained that the process of joining the board was simpler than she had anticipated. “Getting the signatures and completing the steps was very easy,” she said, emphasizing how accessible the process felt. This simplicity allowed her to focus on preparing for her role and setting goals for her time on the board.
Her primary goal is to ensure that Montague Area Public Schools continues moving forward in a way that sets students up for success. Fullmer is committed to fostering an educational environment that equips young people with the tools they need to thrive as adults. While she found some policies and committee structures new and slightly confusing, she expressed curiosity and determination to navigate these complexities as she grows into her role.
When asked to share something personal, Fullmer revealed her love for the outdoors. “I really like to be outside, no matter the season,” she shared, highlighting her adventurous spirit. Whether it’s winter snow or summer sunshine, Fullmer enjoys engaging in a variety of outdoor activities, a passion that mirrors her enthusiasm for her new responsibilities on the board.
Organizational Beginnings
The January 13, 2025, Montague Area Public Schools Board of Education meeting was held in the Montague High School CAT Lab. The session started promptly at 6:00 p.m. with all members in attendance. Newly sworn-in board members, Fullmer and Cindy Francis, joined the other members: Brent Raeth, Joel Smith, Amanda Dahl, Karen Neubauer, and Scott Beishuizen. Led by Michelle Pulver, who served as Secretary Pro-Tem, the board swiftly moved through its initial procedures, including the Pledge of Allegiance and agenda approval.
The meeting showcased a collaborative spirit as members unanimously supported the appointment of Pulver to her temporary position. The structured agenda ensured that all critical topics were covered efficiently, setting a tone of professionalism and focus.
Major Decisions and Elections
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to elections and appointments for the 2025 calendar year. The board selected its leadership team, electing Brent Raeth as President, Joel Smith as Vice President, Cindy Francis as Secretary, and Amanda Dahl as Treasurer. These elections reaffirmed the board’s commitment to experienced leadership and balanced decision-making.
Further decisions included the appointment of key roles such as school attorneys and district auditors. The board selected Thrun Law Firm, P.C., and Smith, Haughey, Rice & Roegge as the legal representatives for the district. Vredeveld Haefner LLC was named the district’s auditor for the year, reflecting the board’s dedication to accountability and sound financial practices.
Additionally, the board approved policies for managing district credit cards and authorized several employees to use them for official business. These measures ensure efficient operations while maintaining strict oversight.
Reports from the District
During the meeting, district principals provided updates on recent events and student accomplishments. These included highlights of curriculum advancements, extracurricular achievements, and holiday activities that had been organized for students. Principals also recognized the contributions of staff members, emphasizing the collective effort to enhance the educational experience.
Superintendent Jeffrey Johnson added to the reports by announcing the hire of Grace Covell, a new high school cook aide, who will contribute to the district’s food service program. Johnson also provided updates on legislative matters, including Title IX policies and district safety and security initiatives. These updates reflect the district’s focus on staying informed and proactive in addressing the needs of its schools.
Moving Toward the Future
Looking ahead, the board approved training for members to enhance their skills and knowledge. Cindy Francis was given the green light to enroll in online courses offered by MASB, including modules on legislative processes, communication, and parliamentary procedures. These courses aim to equip board members with the tools to navigate their responsibilities effectively.
While much of the meeting focused on planning and logistics, it was evident that the board remains committed to fostering a positive educational environment for students and families in Montague. Fullmer’s addition brings fresh ideas, while the decisions made during the session reflect the district’s long-term vision.
