A New Chapter for Papa’s Pizza: Family Tradition Continues

Papa’s Pizza, established in 1967, has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors for many years. Over time, it provided employment, entertainment, and delicious food to the community. In June 2024, the Aebig family took over the restaurant from Bill Stowe and his daughter, Sarah. The Aebigs continued the tradition after receiving training from the previous owners. Interestingly, before serving pizza, the building was a sign shop, adding another layer to its rich history.

A Leap of Faith and a Family Legacy

When asked why her family decided to buy Papa’s Pizza, Mrs. Aebig shared the story with enthusiasm. She explained that the restaurant was a family favorite and an important part of the community. Although it wasn’t initially for sale, the Aebigs approached Bill Stowe to discuss the idea. Bill, who is Mrs. Aebig’s father’s cousin but affectionately called “Uncle Bill,” agreed to pass it on. Because of their love for the restaurant and community, the Aebigs felt it was the perfect way to give back.

Preserving Nostalgia with a Modern Touch

The Aebigs want Papa’s Pizza to remain a place for memories while introducing some exciting updates. Mrs. Aebig mentioned their goal of providing nostalgic foods that locals and visitors would enjoy. She also hinted at adding new flavors to the menu that honor the restaurant’s history. Transitioning into their role, they aim to balance tradition with innovation. Maintaining the welcoming atmosphere is just as important as serving excellent food.

Challenges, Rewards, and Family Dedication

Taking over a longstanding business hasn’t been without its challenges for the Aebigs. Renovating the building, which is very old, has been difficult. Setting realistic goals and sticking to budgets have been particularly challenging. Despite this, the biggest reward is hearing longtime customers praise the food for staying true to its roots. Transitioning into their roles, the Aebig family remains motivated by their customers’ love and loyalty.

A Slice of Passion

The restaurant is a true family business, with everyone pitching in to make it a success. Mrs. Aebig highlighted her husband, Chris, and their children—Christopher, Claire, and Steven—for their hard work. Other family members, such as her father-in-law Steve, sister-in-law Jennifer, and her dad, “Inspector Peterson,” also help regularly. The staff, who feel like family, contribute to the welcoming environment as well. Mrs. Aebig’s favorite pizza is the Chicago Style Deep Dish, which her husband created, and she recommends dipping the crust in house-made ranch.

With their dedication, the Aebig family is preserving the traditions of Papa’s Pizza while building a bright future for it.
