Tragic Incident at Comfort Inn in Whitehall

A tragic incident unfolded early Friday morning at the Comfort Inn in Whitehall Township, where a 37-year-old man from Mears died following a confrontation with a Muskegon County Sheriff’s deputy.

Around 4:50 a.m., the man’s mother called 911, concerned that her son might harm himself. Deputies responded to the hotel shortly after 5 a.m. and found the man unresponsive in his room with self-inflicted injuries.

As one deputy went outside to retrieve medical supplies, the man reportedly charged at another deputy with a box cutter. In response, the deputy fired multiple shots, striking the man. Despite efforts to help, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard in such situations. Authorities from neighboring counties are conducting the investigation.

The Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office expressed regret over the tragic turn of events, stressing their intent to provide assistance during the welfare check.

The Michigan Crisis Access Line remains available for anyone in need of mental health support, accessible by calling or texting 988.
