Voters to Decide on Museum and School Millages May 6

Residents across the White Lake area will head to the polls on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to vote on important proposals affecting Muskegon County and the Whitehall District Schools.

For All Voters in Muskegon County (Including the City of Montague, Montague Township, City of Whitehall, and Whitehall Township):

  • Muskegon Museum Millage Proposal:
Voters will consider a county-wide millage of 0.31 mills ($0.31 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of 20 years (2025–2044). If approved, this millage will provide funding to renovate, update, and expand the Muskegon Museum of History & Science, part of the Lakeshore Museum Center. The proposal also covers purchasing new furniture, fixtures, and equipment to enhance the museum experience. Estimated revenue in the first year is approximately $1.9 million.

Additional Proposal for Whitehall District Schools Voters (City of Whitehall & Whitehall Township):

  • Whitehall District Schools Operating Millage Proposal:
This proposal allows the district to continue levying up to 18 mills on all non-principal residence property, ensuring the district receives its full per-pupil foundation allowance. An additional 2 mills would be levied as needed to restore funding reductions tied to the “Headlee” amendment. The combined 20 mills ($20.00 per $1,000 of taxable value) would be collected for 10 years (2026–2035), generating an estimated $4.18 million in 2026 if fully levied.

Voting Information:

  • Election Date: Tuesday, May 6, 2025
  • Poll Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Voters are encouraged to review the proposals and make their voices heard in this important local election.
