Whitehall Schools Discuss Millage Renewal

Community invited to ask questions at 6 p.m. session tonight at the VAC

CatchMark Community attended Wednesday morning’s Coffee with the Superintendent at the Viking Athletic Center, where Whitehall District Schools Superintendent CJ Van Wieren welcomed local residents for a casual and informative discussion on the upcoming non-homestead operating millage vote, scheduled for next Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

The gathering provided an opportunity for community members to ask questions, gain clarity, and understand the significance of the operating millage, which has been in place since 1995 and is critical to the district’s ability to receive full per-pupil funding from the State of Michigan.

Superintendent Van Wieren explained that:

  • The 18 mills are levied only on non-homestead properties, such as second homes, rental properties, and commercial businesses—not on primary residences.
  • Due to the Headlee Amendment rollback, the rate dropped below the required 18 mills in 2024, prompting this renewal request, which includes up to 20 mills as a safeguard.
  • Without approval, the district stands to lose approximately $4.2 million in essential funding for operations including salaries, transportation, classroom supplies, and utilities.

Community members in attendance shared personal stories and expressed their support for education, while also acknowledging confusion within the broader community about the proposal. A key takeaway was the reminder that this is not a new tax, but a renewal that sustains the current level of school operations.

Superintendent Van Wieren encouraged residents to continue the conversation and ensure friends and neighbors understand the facts before casting their votes.

If you still have questions, you’re encouraged to attend the Community Night Q&A tonight, Wednesday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Viking Athletic Center (541 E. Slocum St., Whitehall).
