Starting April 2, 2025, Michigan’s updated child car seat laws go into effect—and they bring big changes for families with young children.
The goal? Safer travel for our youngest passengers.
Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or caregiver in the White Lake area, here’s what you need to know about the new guidelines and how they compare to the old rules.
What’s Changing?
Car Seat Stage
Before April 2025
Starting April 2, 2025
Rear-Facing
Until 1 year old or under 20 lbs
Until 2 years old or over the seat’s height/weight limit
Forward-Facing (with harness)
Until age 4, if possible in the back seat
Until age 5 or over seat’s height/weight limit
Booster Seat
Until age 8 or 4’9″
Same requirement
Back Seat & Buckled
Ages 8–15 must buckle up; age 16+ must buckle in front
Under 13 should be in the back seat, buckled properly
These updates are based on national safety research and align Michigan with best practices recommended by pediatricians and traffic safety experts.
Local Support & Resources
White Lake area families can find support to stay compliant and keep kids safe:
Car Seat Checks: Keep an eye out for safety check events through local fire departments or Safe Kids West Michigan.
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children. Using the right car seat, the right way, can reduce the risk of injury or death by more than 70%.
Proper usage and placement—like keeping younger kids rear-facing longer and moving older children to the back seat—make a critical difference in the event of a crash.
Bottom Line
This new law isn’t just about compliance—it’s about care. Take time before April 2 to check your child’s current seat, make any necessary upgrades, and ensure it’s properly installed.
