City of Whitehall Police Reports 4/9–4/15

April 9

Whitehall officers responded to a “slumper” call in the 3200 block of Colby Street after a report of a person passed out in a car. The 3:00 p.m. call came from employees at a local business. When police arrived, they found a 33-year-old Muskegon woman who had taken medication on an empty stomach while waiting for a friend at a nearby doctor’s office. After a medical check, her friend was picked up and allowed to drive them home.

Later that day, at 6:05 p.m., police responded to a noise complaint on Colby Street. A caller said the upstairs neighbor was making loud banging noises. However, when officers arrived, they only heard a vacuum cleaner. The incident was found to be part of an ongoing dispute between neighbors. No action was taken.

At 8:30 p.m., officers were again dispatched to the same block on Colby for a welfare check. Residents noticed packages piling up outside a door and hadn’t seen the tenant all day. With help from apartment management, officers entered the unit and found it empty. The door was repaired and secured. It was later confirmed the resident was in the hospital.

April 10

A resident from Oceana County visited the Whitehall Police Department to report fraud. While out of state in late March, someone pretended to be her and withdrew a large amount of money from her credit union account. Investigators believe the suspect, who has committed similar crimes in other states, is an out-of-state resident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police.

April 11

Whitehall officers are searching for a black sedan involved in a hit-and-run crash in the 1000 block of Colby Street. At 5:00 p.m., a 26-year-old Fruitland Township man reported a car sideswiped the van he was driving while attempting to pass another vehicle. The black sedan continued east without stopping. No one was injured, and police are asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect vehicle.

That same night at 11:55 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle driving erratically on Mears Avenue. The vehicle twice crossed the centerline and failed to stop properly at Main Street. A 52-year-old Fruitland Township man was arrested for OWI after showing signs of intoxication and failing sobriety tests. He was lodged in the Muskegon County Jail after a blood sample was taken for further testing.

April 12

At 10:32 p.m., an officer stopped a car for erratic driving in the 3200 block of Colby Street. The vehicle swerved out of a Wesco driveway, nearly causing a crash, and continued driving unusually slow. It later drove south in the northbound lane on Peterson Road. A 53-year-old Fruitport Township man showed clear signs of intoxication and failed multiple sobriety tests. He was arrested for High BAC OWI and taken to the Muskegon County Jail, where a breath test confirmed a BAC over .17.

April 15

A deer caused a crash at 8:04 a.m. in the 1000 block of Colby Street. A 28-year-old Mears woman was driving east when a deer ran into the side of her vehicle, shattering the driver’s window. The woman received a small cut, but no one else was injured. The deer’s condition is unknown.

Later, at 6:54 p.m., a man on Warner Street reported his work truck had been taken without permission and returned with damage. After work, two employees returned the truck, but one drove off with it and brought it back shortly after. By then, the truck had damage to the front fender. The case remains under investigation, and video footage is being reviewed.

At 7:12 p.m., police responded to a suspicious package call on Warner Street. A caregiver reported finding packages addressed to someone unknown to the resident. Officers confirmed the name did not match any residents and contacted the delivery company. The packages were secured for safekeeping.

At 8:47 p.m., a domestic assault was reported in the 200 block of Hall Street. A woman said her estranged husband came to pick up paperwork but suspected someone else was in the house. He allegedly pushed her against a wall and damaged a screen door while trying to get inside. He left after confronting the other person. The case has been forwarded to the Muskegon County Prosecutor for review.
