Whitehall Social District: Sip, Stroll & Soak in the View

Nestled along the scenic N. Mears Promenade overlooking White Lake, Whitehall’s Social District invites residents and visitors (21+) to enjoy adult beverages in a designated outdoor area, all within a relaxed small‑town setting. As defined by the City of Whitehall, you can purchase drinks from participating establishments and sip them in the common area—just be sure not to wander outside the marked boundaries or into parking lots.

Participating Businesses & Hours

Current businesses included in the district are:

  • Fetch Brewing Co. (100 W Colby St.)
  • Hanson Hill Waterfront Grill (115 N Mears Ave.)
  • Pub 111 (111 W Colby St.)

Operating hours align with the venues’ normal schedules:

  • Sunday: 12 pm – 10 pm
  • Monday–Wednesday: 2 pm – 11 pm
  • Thursday–Saturday: 12 pm – midnight

How It Works

  1. Order your drink in a special “Social District cup” from any participating establishment.
  2. Enjoy it within the designated area.
  3. Once you’re done, discard the cup—refills aren’t allowed.
  4. Drinking is restricted to that area only; parking lots and walkways are off-limits.

Local Flavor & Experience

According to Muskegon County’s tourism board, the Social District here stands out for its breathtaking views, cozy fireside seating, and small‑town charm. It complements local shops, breweries, eateries, and a scenic bike trail—and there’s even a performance at the nearby Playhouse at White Lake to cap off the evening.

History & Expansion

The initiative began when the city council voted to approve the Social District in October (roughly 3.6 years ago) but needed final approval from the State of Michigan to move forward.

In August 2024, new owner Patrick Nulty of Mylan’s Waterfront Grille submitted a request to include his venue in the district, potentially expanding the coverage near Fetch Brewing Company to benefit both spots.

Regional Context

Whitehall is one of several Michigan municipalities recognized by the state’s Liquor Control Commission as having established social districts; as of July 25, 2025, it’s listed alongside Montague and Muskegon City in Muskegon County.

The White Lake Area Chamber & Visitors Bureau notes that the Whitehall Social District opened in July 2022, located along the Mears Promenade with a sunset‑ready lakeside vibe and a community fire pit during cooler months.

Why It Matters

The Social District not only adds a lively, communal atmosphere to downtown Whitehall but also bolsters local businesses, draws tourism, and enhances experiences in combination with cultural venues and scenic amenities. Its development showcases a thoughtful blending of local charm and modern innovation to enrich community life.
