treating 💀👻🎃🍭🍫🍬👍😎

And in honor of this Hallow’s eve night 🌙 This weeks feature creature is perfectly picked as a creepy cool 😎 creature for halloween 🎃.

A terrifyingly , mostly solitary , hungry and hot tempered cartoon star ⭐️ carnivore that stalks and screams thru the night on its home island 🏝️ of Tasmania . Tiny but with a mighty attitude bigger than its size; this ferocious bear 🐻 looking carnivore may seem mean and vicious in looks, sounds, actions and name ; but this creature actually barely wants any trouble with people (as long as you dont get too close to them or their food 🍖) and a big help to us with reducing disease 🦠 thru the rotting food it eats. But with harsh threat from a terrible disease for them, they need our help just as much; or they’ll meet a terrifying end like their close cousin; the Tasmanian Tiger 🥺🥺🥺

This weeks feature creature is the Tasmanian Devil 😈

1. With males being a bit larger than females at 2ft long & weighing in at 12 to 30lbs (about the size of a year old bear 🐻cub); The Tasmanian Devil is the largest Carnivorous marsupial in the world 🌎; once second only to the now extinct (unless proven not) Tasmanian Tiger

2. Tasmanian devils once lived on Mainland australia with the Tazzy tiger; but were out competed by the arrival of the dingo 🐕. Now Tasmania is the only place where they’re found in the wild.

3. Tasmanian devils have been so named due to their loud & “unearthly” Territorial screams & yowls 😱 ,, which made early settlers think demons 😈 were hiding in the bushlands!

4. Tasmanian devils are nocturnal hunters who roam the brushlands and forests 🌳 for food. With great hearing 👂that can pick up sounds from half a mile away, keen sense of smell 👃 to pick up scents from several miles away, sensitive whiskers , and sharp black & white night vision 👁️; make them great night time navigators

5. Like their cartoon counterparts; Tazzy devils are fierce gluttons; known for eating up to 40% of their body weight in just half an hour! They’ll eat just about everything from insects 🐜, grubs 🐛, maggots , fish 🐟, frogs 🐸, lizards 🦎 snakes 🐍 (even venomous ones!), birds 🐦, eggs 🥚, and mammals from small as rats 🐀, wombats (a top fav), echidnas , & platypuses to as big as wallabies and small kangaroos 🦘 !

6. Their scientific species name literally translates to “Meat 🥩 Lover”

7. They also can easily stomach rotting meat 🍖 , feathers 🪶 fur, and bones 🦴; eating stuff very few animals can survive on which makes them important scavengers for Tasmania. Barely nything is left after a single or a group of devils feed. A single family of devils can wolf down a dead ☠️ horse 🐴 in just a few hours!!

8. Despite their waddle like gait thanks to short back legs 🦵& long front ones; tasmanian devils are fast runners 🏃; able to sprint at 22mph for short distances & pace themselves at 7mph for several miles! A tazzy devil can cover 10 miles a night looking for food 🥘

9. With their sharp claws , theyre great diggers 🪏 & young T Devils are expert tree 🌳 climbers; which help them smell for food. They also have thumbs 👍 which help handle & manipulate food

10. Pound for pound ; Tazzy Devils have the strongest 💪 bite of Any Mammal; with bite forces of 400 lbs! They have 42 ever growing teeth 🦷 and inch long canines; which comes in handy when they chew tough bones 🦴. Their jaws are so strong, they can bite thru steel wires like a pair of bolt cutters!

11. A Tasmanian devil can opens its jaws 80 degrees; the same as a T.rex 🦖!

12. Tasmanian devils store fat reserves in their tails, like other marsupials

13. Along with strong jaws & huge appetites; Tazzy Devils are well known for their nasty tempers 😤. When angered ; they can get into some nasty spinning fits where they give off their loud famous yowls, sneezing 🤧, show their teeth with wide yawns 🥱, and their ears 👂 will glow bright red before a battle starts ; whether over food or space. A smaller hungrier devil can actually be more fiercer than a bigger less hungry one!

14. Along with biting and wrestling opponents; tazzy devils can emit a foul smelling odor 🤢 from glands on their bum to ward off enemies like a skunk 🦨! Outside people , domestic dogs 🐶 and the tasmanian tiger (depending on if its still around or not); introduced Red foxes 🦊 are the only main predators for adult devils, while young ones have to watch out for owls 🦉, eagles 🦅, quolls , and bigger Tasmanian devils!

15. Some Tasmanian devils are born with a white chest patch on their chest; which scientists think is used as a flag 🏁 to draw aggressive bites away from their more vulnerable faces

16. With their tough and messy diet and scrappy nature; you’d think they’d have messy 🏠; but actually, theyre quite clean 🧼! They keep their dens whether on underground burrows 🕳️ , caves, or in hollow logs 🪵 very clean 🧽; regulary changing the bedding

17. Mating for Tazzy Devils happens in the Autumn 🍂 ; when food is most abundant. Males track down females and fight any males who come their way. After a dominant male is choosen; the female will mate and have some fights as well; which leaves some scars. Females even develop a fatty area around the neck called the “Scruff” for protection with these loving 🥰 battles

18. After a pregnancy of 3 weeks, a mother Tasmanian devil gives birth to 20 to 30 sometimes 50) joeys (also known as pups 🐶 or imps) that weigh 0.2g and are the size of a Raisin! but mainly only 4 survive 🥺since there’s only 4 nipples to drink 🥛 milk from in her backwards facing pouch. This helps keep dirt out when she digs

19. Joeys reach fully maturity of 2 years old and can live to be 8 years old

20. The worst threat to the Tasmanian Population alongside people & cars 🚗 (since theyre attracted to roadkill which is a major threat ) is an ilness called Devil Face Tumor Disease 🦠😔, which results in serious swellings around the face and mouth 👄 which literally makes it impossible to eat. Scientists & researchers are fighting hard to find a cure or treatment to help. So fingers crossed 🤞 for these cool devils 🥺

Next weeks feature creature hint 🫆❓: this next animal is also main inspiration for another well beloved fictional character. Found in the cloud ☁️ forests 🌳 of south america; this big furry creature has a real sweet tooth 🦷 (although marmalade 🍊 isnt really on its daily menu 😅)
