Discover what’s going on this month at the White Lake Community Library and Montague Library! From storytimes and family nights to creative programs, there’s something for everyone in October.

Big Read Lakeshore Adult Reading Challenge: Read the Great Lakes (White Lake Community Library)

The White Lake Community Library invites readers to join the Read the Great Lakes challenge, exploring books set on, near, or about each of the five Great Lakes for a chance to win a prize pack while deepening appreciation for the region. This year’s challenge ties into the Big Read Lakeshore and highlights Leif Enger’s I Cheerfully Refuse, with the author speaking at MCC’s Overbrook Theater on Nov. 13 at 6 PM.

Manhattan Short Film Festival (White Lake Community Library)

The Manhattan Short Film Festival will open the month at White Lake Community Library on October 1. Movie lovers can enjoy a special screening from 1–4 p.m. This program gives the community a chance to watch and discuss short films together. It is a unique opportunity to experience global cinema close to home.

Family Storytime (White Lake Community Library)

Children and caregivers are welcome at the White Lake Community Library on Mondays from 9:30–10:30 a.m. for a lively hour of stories, music, and movement. No sign-up needed—drop in whenever it works for you!

Baby Time (White Lake Community Library)

Bring your little ones (ages 0–2) to Baby Time at the White Lake Community Library on Tuesdays from 9:30–10:30 a.m. Enjoy songs, music, and movement together in this fun early learning program.

Toddler Storytime (Montague Branch)

Young children can enjoy Toddler Storytime Tuesday’s at Montague Branch. Sessions run from 9:30–10:30 a.m. Kids hear stories, sing songs, and interact with others. The goal is to build early literacy skills in a fun way.

Knit, Crochet & Connect (White Lake Community Library)

White Lake also offers Knit, Crochet, & Connect on October 6 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Crafters of all skill levels are welcome. The event encourages conversation while people work on their projects. It is a relaxing way to meet others and share ideas. Registration: New Group Forming: Knit, Crochet, & Connect

Adventure Nature Journey (Montague Branch)

For kids who love the outdoors, Adventure Nature Journey happens October 8 from 3:30–4:30 p.m. Children will explore nature themes with engaging activities. The program brings science and curiosity together. It helps kids connect with the world around them.

Gentle Yoga (White Lake Community Library)

Join certified instructor Heather Hesse for a gentle yoga session open to all experience levels. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one and a water bottle. Cost is $10 per class. No need to register in advance.

Chair Yoga Class (White Lake Community Library)

Join Rhonda Aley for Chair Yoga, a gentle and accessible class designed for all levels, every Thursday, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Using chairs for support, this practice builds strength, flexibility, and peace of mind—perfect for beginners, those with mobility challenges, or anyone wanting a safe, effective yoga experience. Suggested donation is $5, or free for Silver Sneaker participants.

123 Play With Me (October only) (White Lake Community Library)

“1-2-3 Play with Me” returns with a five-week series for caregivers and children ages 0–5. Each session includes time with an early childhood specialist who can answer parenting questions and offer support. The program meets on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Families are encouraged to attend all sessions. Advance registration is required—please reserve one ticket per household.

Play & Learn (White Lake Community Library)

Join the White Lake Community Library on Fridays from 9:30–10:30 a.m. for an engaging hour of stories, songs, and playtime for children ages 5 and under and their caregivers.

Afternoon Hang (White Lake Community Library)

Teens can join Afternoon Hang on Friday’s from 2-4 p.m., see full schedule here. The program provides space for relaxation and creativity. Students can meet friends and enjoy games or crafts. It is designed to give teens a safe, fun place to gather.

Pick-Your-Own-Book Club (White Lake Community Library)

The Pick-Your-Own-Book Club, October 14 at 5:30 p.m. Each participant chooses a book and then shares about it. The goal is to open discussions across many genres. It provides flexibility for different reading tastes.

Tumbled Glass Suncatcher (Montague Branch) Registration Required

Montague Branch hosts Tumbled Glass Suncatcher on October 15 from 5:30–7 p.m. Registration is required for this hands-on project. Participants use glass to create colorful art. It’s a calming and rewarding craft experience.

Library Anniversary Celebration (White Lake Community Library)

On October 17, White Lake will hold its Anniversary Open House from 6–8 p.m. This special event celebrates years of service to the community. Families and patrons can join in the festivities. It is a great way to honor the library’s impact.

Cookbook Club (White Lake Community Library)

The Cookbook Club meets on October 20 at 5:30 p.m. Members bring dishes that fit the monthly theme. The club mixes cooking and conversation in a fun way. This gathering is perfect for food lovers.

Craft-a-Palooza Adult Craft Challenge (White Lake Community Library)

Unleash your creativity at the White Lake Community Library on Monday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m.! Using leftover craft supplies, participants will have one hour to make something unique, then showcase their creations for voting and prizes in fun categories like Most Colorful, Wackiest, and Most Likely to Be Found in a Museum. Marble Your Pumpkin (Montague Branch) Registration Required

Montague Branch offers Marble Your Pumpkin on October 27 from 10–11 a.m. and October 30 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Adults decorate pumpkins with a marbling technique. This seasonal activity blends creativity with fall tradition. Registration opens closer to the dates.

Grandmothers Group (White Lake Community Library)

At the White Lake Community Library, a group of local women gathers on the last Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. for thoughtful and lively conversations about their roles, relationships, and experiences in the second half of life. Inspired by traditions where elders are honored as “Grandmothers,” this welcoming circle invites all women—whether grandmothers or not—to join in.

Thai Beats & Bites (Montague Branch) Registration Required

Teens and tweens are invited to Thai Beats & Bites on October 29 from 4–5 p.m. This program introduces culture through music and food. It encourages students to explore something new. The event combines fun with learning. Registration opens Wednesday October 1 at 12 a.m.

Marble Your Pumpkin (Montague Branch) Registration Required

Montague Branch offers Marble Your Pumpkin on October 30 from 10–11 a.m. and October 30 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Adults decorate pumpkins with a marbling technique. This seasonal activity blends creativity with fall tradition. Registration opens closer to the dates.
