New Life for Knit & Spin in Montague

When Floyd Peplinski walked into Knit & Spin, he had no intention of buying a business. But something about the shop—and the story behind it—spoke to him.

“I either need a frontal lobotomy or a bottle in front of me,” he joked about the decision. “But seriously, I just couldn’t let it close.”

Nestled in West Michigan’s creative community, Knit & Spin was on the brink of shutting down for good. Floyd had already visited many of the similar specialty shops across the region when he heard this one was set to close. That’s when he made the decision to keep the doors open.

Knit & Spin officially reopened today, March 31, under Floyd’s ownership with help from his son, Paul Peplinski, who manages the shop.

The Peplinski family’s journey to yarn and fiber art stretches back generations. “My mom taught me how to knit and crochet when I was five,” Floyd shared. After her passing about 15 months ago, he inherited some money—and decided to use that to invest in something meaningful.

Now living in Muskegon and originally from Hesperia, Floyd is passionate about continuing the legacy of creativity and craftsmanship that Knit & Spin represents.

The shop specializes in high-quality fibers for knitting, crocheting, weaving, and spinning. Whether you’re an experienced fiber artist or someone who hasn’t quite figured out how to make a YouTube tutorial work, Knit & Spin has you covered.

“We’re offering classes for beginners and intermediate learners,” Floyd said. “We have spinning wheels, weaving looms, and knitting looms—really, anything for this kind of hobby.”

The team is still working on setting up social media and a website, but the physical store is now open and ready to welcome customers. Classes will be starting soon, and Floyd hopes to see more people—especially beginners—give the fiber arts a try.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to knit, crochet, or spin but didn’t know where to start, this warm and welcoming shop might be just the place.
