This summer the Arts Council of White Lake – Nuveen (ACWL-Nuveen) will host a free opportunity for community members of all ages to exhibit lighthouse themed artwork. The exhibit – Beacons on the Shore – July 29 – August 30 was inspired by White Lake’s own White River Light Station’s (WRLS) 150th Anniversary. The ACWL-Nuveen wants to acknowledge this impressive milestone by celebrating with creativity!
Living in West Michigan we are all very familiar with the lighthouses found at critical navigation junctures along the shores of Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes. These well-established beacons fulfill a vital function to warn mariners of dangerous shallows and help to guide vessels safely in and out of harbors in all kinds of weather. Lighthouses and their histories have also been inspirational to artists, poets, and musicians, as symbols of resilience and hope in the face of adversity. All lighthouses have rich stories to tell – what inspires you about lighthouses?
The Beacons on the Shore exhibition is an opportunity for artists of all ages to show off their original artwork with a lighthouse theme. ACWL-Nuveen welcomes art created from all kinds of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, 3D, as well as video and original music – https://www.artswhitelake.org/call-for-artists. And there will be prizes! An ACWL-Nuveen award for $100 in the Adult Division – $50 in the Youth Division and Honorable Mention awards of art supplies in both categories. Another bonus is that the Lakeshore Keepers association has generously donated two all-access passes for four West Michigan lighthouses they maintain – Big Sable Point, Little Sable Point, Ludington North Breakwater and the White River Light Station & Museum. Winners of the tickets and art awards will be announced at the community reception for the show on Saturday August 2 from 1:00 – 3:00pm.
All artwork needs to be dropped off the week of July 15-19 so that the ACWL staff can hang the show the following week. The exhibit will be open to the public on Tuesday July 29 and run until August 30th. A public reception will be held on Saturday August 2 when awards will be announced… Any questions please reach out – 231-893-2524 or nuveen@artswhitelake.org or stop by ACWL-Nuveen’s location at 106 E.
