White Lake History – Walk the Beat

Each summer, Montague and Whitehall come alive with the sound of local music during Walk the Beat White Lake. This free street music festival, part of a broader Walk the Beat movement across Michigan, gives both towns a chance to showcase talent, support youth, and unite the community.

From Grand Haven to White Lake

The Walk the Beat idea began over a decade ago in Grand Haven. It quickly spread to places like Albion and eventually reached the White Lake area. Montague and Whitehall joined the lineup around four years ago. Since then, the festival has grown into one of the area’s most loved events. Local leaders, businesses, and volunteers have helped build it into something that feels both grassroots and professional.

Music on Every Corner

Each year, the festival spreads out across 10 or more venues in both downtowns. Restaurants, parks, and storefronts become concert spots. Each location features two different music acts, giving visitors a reason to keep moving. It’s called “Walk the Beat” for a reason—people walk from place to place, catching shows, chatting with friends, and enjoying the atmosphere.

In 2025, Walk the Beat White Lake featured 20 acts across 10 venues from 1 to 5 p.m. Afterward, the fun continued with an evening concert at the North Mears Promenade featuring Post Fontaine. The day was full of upbeat music, raffles, food trucks, and the buzz of downtown excitement.

Supporting Music and Youth

Walk the Beat is about more than just a good time. It also helps kids get involved in music. Through a program called Repeat the Beat, students can receive musical instruments, lessons, and scholarships. The group behind the festival, Spread the Music Foundation, works to remove the cost barrier that often keeps young people from learning to play.

There are also raffles with big prizes, including guitars, gift cards, and festival T-shirts. In 2025, the prize pool was worth more than $5,000. Guests didn’t need to pay to enter—just showing up gave them a shot.

A Lasting Impact on the Community

Walk the Beat brings the two towns together in a unique way. Local business owners join forces with musicians and volunteers to create something memorable. The event boosts foot traffic downtown, encourages people to explore, and gives new artists a stage. With help from groups like the White Lake Chamber of Commerce, it continues to grow each year.

From its Grand Haven beginnings to its strong presence in Montague and Whitehall, Walk the Beat has become a symbol of creativity, connection, and community pride.
