The Whitehall District Schools Board of Education held a short meeting on Monday, August 18, 2025, that included a closed session to consider a student reinstatement and a quick review of routine business to include the start of school, community day, and new student school board members.
Agenda & Public Comment
The agenda was approved without discussion.
No members of the public offered comment during either of the two public-comment opportunities.
Consent Action & Financial Update
The consent action agenda was approved as presented.
July financials reflected a quiet start to the new fiscal year. Revenues appeared lower year-over-year primarily because insurance claim payments boosted last July’s numbers.
The district’s annual audit has been completed; an audit exit meeting will be scheduled next.
Budget outlook: leaders noted continued uncertainty, with the federal government’s budget still not finalized for the year and the State of Michigan’s K-12 budget also unresolved, leaving districts in a holding pattern.
Superintendent Report & Back-to-School Updates (CJ Van Wiren)
Open houses: The district kicked off its first open houses at Ealy Elementary and Shoreline Elementary—both well attended. Next up (Aug. 19):
Middle School: 5:00–6:30 p.m.
High School: 5:30–7:00 p.m.
Kindergarten T-shirt handout: Staff are coordinating this year’s distribution after last year’s success.
Student Board Representatives: The Board appointed Emily Van Dam and Kate Beta.
Community Day: Administrators are looking forward to Whitehall District Schools Community Day on September 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the football field.
First day of school: August 19 (half day).
Closed Session & Action
After a closed session, the Board voted to approve the conditional reinstatement of a student on a roll-call vote. Board members emphasized their support for the student’s success moving forward.
Adjournment
With no further business, the Board adjourned. Next board meeting will be on September 15, 2025 at the Viking Athletic Center (VAC) Conference room at 6:30 pm.
