Whitehall District Schools Board Meeting Recap – December 12, 2025

Whitehall School Board Reviews Finances, Student Activities, and Bond Progress

The Whitehall District Schools Board of Education met on Monday, December 15, 2025, at the Viking Athletic Complex to address several important topics, including finances, facility upgrades, student activities, and long-term building improvements. The meeting highlighted both the district’s current strengths and areas where additional support and planning are underway.

Alternative Education and Student Success

During the meeting, administrators discussed the district’s alternative education program and its identification as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school. While this designation can sound concerning, district leaders explained that it also brings valuable support from the Michigan Department of Education and the local ISD. These resources may include guidance and potential funding to strengthen programs that serve students with unique needs. Board members emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work done by staff and students, especially during alternative education graduation ceremonies, which show how much effort goes into helping students earn their diplomas.

Student Activities and School Events

The student representative shared updates on a busy and successful month across the district. Middle school students attended their first dance of the year, while music programs held winter concerts featuring band, choir, and jazz ensembles. At the high school level, students prepared for finals while clubs, athletics, and organizations remained active. Events like the annual breakfast program and strong performances by teams such as bowling showed continued student engagement as winter break approached.

Budget Update and Financial Health

The board reviewed Budget Amendment #1, which showed positive financial news for the district. Enrollment calculations came in slightly higher than expected, and state funding was approximately $50 more per pupil than originally projected. This resulted in an estimated $175,000 increase in revenue. While some expenses rose due to staffing adjustments, health insurance costs, and legal fees, overall finances remain stable. Officials noted that the district is in a good position to plan for building improvements not covered by the bond.

Facility Improvements and Bond Planning

Several facility projects were discussed, including approval of an audio system upgrade at the Viking Athletic Complex to prevent technical issues during large events like graduation. The superintendent also provided an update on bond planning, explaining that major projects, such as boiler replacements and building upgrades, are scheduled over the next few summers. While some work may begin in 2026, larger projects are expected to be completed by 2027 and 2028 due to construction timelines and school schedules. District leaders stressed their commitment to transparency and keeping the community informed about how bond funds are used.

Looking Ahead

The meeting concluded with a message of appreciation for staff, students, and the community, along with holiday well-wishes. Board members expressed optimism about the district’s direction and confidence that ongoing planning and support will continue to benefit Whitehall students in the years ahead.
