This weeks feature creature is one of the most elusive and stealthy predators on the planet. Legendary among many who live on the african jungles , deserts 
and brushlands ; this creature is well known and recognized yet very few get to see it. And those who do ; are likely to never be seen again; as they end up on this stealthy 
feline’s menu. Only outmatched by the king 
of beasts and the cunning hyena ; this predator is the prince of the shadows and should be well respected as it disappears with its rosette spotted coat as it stalks thru the night 
or lounges up in a tree 
; chillaxin during the heat of the day.
This weeks feature creature is the African Leopard!
1. With males measuring in at 6ft long, standing 2ft tall at the shoulder, and weighing in at 211lbs ; the African Leopard is the largest of the leopard 
species, the 2nd largest wild cat in africa, the 4th largest of the big cats.
2. They also have the widest range of all african wild cats, living in nearly any environment such as grasslands, deserts , mountains 
, swamps and rainforests
3. African leopards are quite arboreal, using trees to cache their kills in order to protect them and their meals from other, stronger predators like lions 
, hyenas or wild dogs 
. Sleeping 
up in trees 
are a main thing for these cats as well.
4. Despite their smaller size, African Leopards are considered to be the strongest 
of the big cats for their size! They have strong front legs 
to help them drag prey 3 times a leopards body weight up to 50ft into a tree; all while holding their prey in their teeth 
!
5. Extremely agile, able to spring at 37 mph, leap 20ft in a single bound, and jump 10ft straight up in the air , and being strong swimmers 
; Theyre truly incredible athletes. Leopards can even climb 
down trees head first!
6. Leopards are the well known as the connoisseur hunter of the bush; as they eat more varieties of prey then any other predator (up to 92 different kinds of prey!) . Along with the usual antelopes, monkeys 
, baboons , and warthogs 
; they’ll also eat insects 
, frogs 
, Lizards 
, snakes 
as big as pythons , rodents from squirrels 
to porcupines, hares 
, 
fish, crabs 
, birds 
, other predators like jackals and wild cats; and prey up to as big as young giraffes 
, small crocs 
and even Gorillas 
!
7. Armed with 32 sharp teeth with 2 inch fangs backed up by 500 lbs of bite force , plus 10 2 inch retractable claws ; African leopard are deadly predators; grabbing prey with their claws and finishing with a bite to the neck.
8. Leopards are well known for their rosette spotted coats; which help them blend in with their surroundings. Along with being leaner and slimmer than jaguars with longer tails, not having dots in their rosettes is how you can tell a leopard from a jaguar
9. Leopards sometimes occur as a melanistic morph, where the base coat color is black and is pretty rare and elusively seen. The rosettes can still be seen in some lighting circumstances. It took scientists 
years before they spotted one again in the wild!
10. Leopards are well known for being deadly nocturnal assasins. They have phenomenal eyesight that’s 7 times better in the dark than humans! Plus their hearing 
, sense of smell 
and sensitive whiskers also help move thru the dark with ease in pure silence thanks to silent paws 
that muffle sound as they travel 
15 miles a night on the hunt
11. Leopards are pretty territorial and will get into deadly battles if they encounter each other. Males will do the same during the mating season.
12. Females can give birth to a litter of 2 to 3 smoky gray spotless cubs; and constantly move them to new den sites to keep them safe from predators. When theyre 6 to 8 weeks old, they’ll be able to leave the den and eat solid foods. They’ll stay with their mother till theyre 2 years old
13. While they can roar, a leopards roar sounds like a mix between rasps, grunts and snores; with a hunt of a saw slicing thru wood 
. A scary sound perfect to be used as a warning to enemies such as lions , hyenas, wild dogs , crocs , pythons and baboons which can put up a tough fight / wound leopards!
