Wild Animal Facts: Spectacled Bear

Hey 👋 Wild Fact Fans, Seth here with the new Friday Feature creature. Don’t forget to please like 👍 , share and comment 💬 questions 🙋 down below 👇 If you have any on this weeks animal ^^

This weeks feature creature is the only kind of bear 🐻 found in the america 🇺🇸 of the south. A lone nomad of the mountains 🏔️ and cloud ☁️ forests 🌳 is well known for its climbing skills , specially marked face, and its strong sweet tooth 🦷; mainly for sweet fruit 🍉 & nectar and not for marmalade.

This weeks feature Creature is the Spectacled Bear 🐻

1. With males being much larger than females with them measuring in at 3ft at the shoulder, 5 to 6ft long, and weighing 220 to 440lbs; the Spectacled Bear is not only the only bear of South America, but is the only living descendant of the Short Faced Bear; the largest land carnivore mammal of all time!

2. Along with being known as the Andean Bear; theyre also known as the Mountain ⛰️ Bear, South American Bear, & the Andean Short-Faced Bear. Its scientific name genus “Tremarctos” which is made up of the Greek words for hole 🕳️ and bear 🐻; referring to a distinct hole in the bear’s upper arm bone 🦴 which helps with tree 🌳 climbing 🧗

3. As their different names suggests; theyre found mainly in the moutains of the andes along with the cloud ☁️ forests of the western parts of south america 🇺🇸 thanks to their thick coarse black fur helping them handle the cold 🥶. They can also be found foraging in the thorny dry forests, grasslands, & coastal deserts 🏜️ of the region

4. Their main name is mainly due to the unique spectacle or glasses 🤓 like markings on their faces; which each bear has a unique pattern. These markings even extend down to the chest

5. Thanks to strong muscles 💪 , long front legs 🦵 and sharp claws ; Spectacled bears are highly arboreal and will sleep 😴 in nests 🪹 they make from branches , find food , and hide in trees from predators like pumas and jaguars 🐆 in the case of cubs & adolescents . They also make platforms so they can feed with more ease.

6. Like all bears 🐻 Along with being good tree 🌴 and rock 🪨 climbers; theyre great swimmers 🏊

7. While the spectacled bear is the largest carnivore mammal in South America, only around 5% of its diet actually consists of meat 🥩. Mainly their diet consists of fruit 🍎 (especially figs ; but no marmalade like Paddington 😅), bromeliads & other succulent plants 🌱 , moss , honey 🍯, nuts 🌰, sap , cacti 🌵, and bark ; with the occasional insects 🐜, birds 🐦, eggs 🥚 snails 🐌, carrion 🥩, small rodents 🐭, rabbits 🐇, sloths 🦥 , and occasionally go after larger mammals like tapirs, deer 🦌 , guanacos, and occasionally livestock 🐐🐑🐴🐖🐮🐔

8. Despite being one of the smallest bears 🐻; they have some of the largest heads for their size (a trait carried from their carnivorous ancestor) with only the giant panda’s 🐼 being larger ; along with being a bit more vegetarian 🌱 than the spectacled bear

9. Cause of their high plant diet, theyre high seed dispersers for their home ecosystems.

10. Spectacled Bears have great hearing and a sense of smell 👃7 times better than a bloodhound 🐶

11. Like all bears, theyre mainly solitary, only exceptions being a pair coming together to mate in April & June, a mother and her cubs (ranging from 1 to 4 but mainly its 2), and it places where food is abundant

12. Cubs are born blind and stay with their mother for a year ; riding on her back till theyre more independent and can live on their own

13. Spectacled Bears are diurnal & Crepuscular; preferring to forage during the day. Theyre among the few bear species who dont hibernate ; since their food is available year round!

Next weeks feature creature hint 🫆❓: this beautiful creature with its very short white and tannish fur and beautiful weapon shaped horns was once extinct ☠️ in the wild 😔; but its starting to make a comeback 🥹👍
