Wild Animal Facts: The Wild Boar

Hey 👋 Wild Fact Fans, Seth here with the new Friday Feature creature. Don’t forget to please like 👍 , share and comment 💬 questions 🙋 down below 👇 If you have any on this weeks animal ^^

This weeks feature creature scrounges thru the forests it usually calls home 🏠; looking for nearly anything to eat; grunting and snorting as it tramples thru the dirt and mud with its keen sense of smell. While usually peaceful; this creature can be as dangerous as a hippo 🦛 when messed with; slashing with tusks that can cut you up like confetti 🎊 and trample ya if ya dont get out of the way. Thanks to people; this powerful beast is now spread across the globe and has become a major invasive species ; causing trouble for animals and humans alike. Despite the chaos in their wake they make; theyre still incredible creatures to admire and respect

This weeks Feature creature is The Wild Boar 🐗

1. Standing at 3ft tall, measuring at 6ft long, and weghing in at 440 lbs; wild boars are the most widespread and common species of wild pig in the world 🌎; originally found in Western Africa , Europe, Northern Asia, Japan 🇯🇵, Indonesia 🇮🇩, & India 🇮🇳

2. Thank to people transporting them for hunting sport; wild boars are now also found in North America 🇺🇸 , South America and Australia 🇦🇺; where theyre serious invasive species ; causing major problems for both humans and animals ; including raiding nests 🪹 of native birds 🐦 and reptiles 🐍

3. Young & bachelor Male Wild boars live either live alone or in groups called sounders . Females live in matriarchal groups made up of 30 boars ; with a matriarch leader; other sows (females), and their young ; with females having 3 to a dozen striped piglets. Stripes help them hide while the adults fight enemies

4. The wild boar has poor eyesight 🤓 but compensates with its excellent sense of smell 👃 & hearing 👂. Wild boars can smell edible roots and tubers buried in 10in of soil! Their snouts 🐽 are highly flexible and perfect for pulling roots out of the ground

5. Wild boars are pretty fast runners ; able to hit speeds of 30 mph for short distances. They also can jump 5ft into the air & are also great swimmers 🏊 and can actually cover 4 miles to get to know territories of food. Although they have difficulty moving thru deep snow ❄️

6. Wild boars are pretty noisy ; communicating with each other thru grunts, snorts, sniffs, calls and whistles.

7. Despite them looking not too bright; theyre very intelligent animals ; up there with raccoons 🦝 in intelligence as theyre able to solve problems and learn from past experiences

8. Like all pigs; wild boar have tusks that grow over time and sharpen as they rub against each other as they chew. A wild boar can have tusks up to 3 to 8 inches long (as long as a pencil ✏️!); which make deadly weapons for both fighting for leadership of a sounder or fighting predators. Tigers 🐅 and leopards 🐆 have been found gored by boar 🐗 tusks!

9. Along with sharp tusks set among their 44 teeth; they also have a wicked bite strength of 400 lbs; the same as a wolf 🐺!

10. Wild boars arent picky eaters; eating just about anything they can find. Along with Roots & tubers ; they’ll eat nuts 🌰, berries 🫐, fruit 🍎, fungi 🍄, worms 🪱, grubs 🐛, insects 🐜, spiders 🕷️, eggs 🥚, small birds 🐦, lizards 🦎, snakes 🐍, small rodents 🐭, and carrion 🍖. Unfortunately, they can cause a lot of damage as they scrounge for food.

11. Outisde searching for food mainly at night ; they often roll around in mud to keep pests away 🦟 and protect from sunburn 🥵 , rub against trees 🌳 to scratch themselves, and laze around in a leaf 🍂 nests during the day 😴. But they have short tempers and can get really mean when disturbed; chattering their tusks together as a warning ⚠️ before they charge.

12. Wild boars have thick bristly fur & a tough hide thats up to 2 inches thick. Along with a thick layer of fat that keeps them warm in freezing cold 🥶 ; it also makes them tough against predators claws and teeth, rattlesnake 🐍 bites , & even small caliber bullets l! Wild boar 🐗 hide is also fire 🔥 retardent ; which is why many use their hides for fireside rugs!

13. While super tough and can handle most enemies , wild boars still have to watch out for crocodilians 🐊, big cats 🐅 , pythons 🐍 , komodo dragons, and bears 🐻 . Wolves 🐺 are among their top predators since packs can surround & overwhelm a single boar 🐗

14. While a messy and trouble making creature; there is plenty of good these animals do for the environment; such as spreading seeds 🌱, cleaning up carrion to help keep diseases 🦠 from spreading, and mud wallows they make lead to new ponds many animals use like frogs 🐸, fish 🐟, turtles 🐢 and birds 🐦

15. Breeding season lasts between November to January; with males growing tougher hides around their vital organs to help protect them during this time. Males guard sounders from other males and get into serious battles to soon get the chance to mate.

16. A sow can have 2 litters of piglets in a year; and the whole sounder helps protect them. If a wild boar mother dies before her piglets are mature, her offspring is adopted by other sows of her sounder. They’ll reach full maturity in 2 years ; which is when male boars leave the sounder

Next weeks feature creature hint 🫆❓: this blind deep seas fish 🐟 can make so much slime; it literally has to twist itself up to wipe it off!
