Montague Library: Innovation, Learning and Community

The Montague Branch of the Muskegon Area District Library (MADL) is more than just a place to check out books; it is a vibrant community hub that provides a variety of resources, events, and unique spaces for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re looking for hands-on creative experiences, a dedicated space for teens, engaging Story Time sessions, or digital resources, the Montague Library offers something for everyone. One of the most innovative and exciting features of the library is the Makerspace, designed to inspire creativity and hands-on learning.

The Makerspace: A Creative Hub for All Ages

The Makerspace at the Montague Library began as a storage closet for the Friends of the Montague Library’s book sale materials. However, with the help of a $10,000 grant from the White Lake Community Foundation, the space was completely transformed and officially opened in October 2022. Since then, it has become one of the library’s biggest draws, attracting visitors not just from Montague but from surrounding communities as well.

“People who are locals here will tell us that they told their family about it, who lived somewhere else. So when their family comes to visit, they want to come here because they want to see the Makerspace,” said Christina Le Vey-Rowland, Team Leader at the Montague Library.

The vision for the Makerspace was to provide access to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) experiences. It offers:

  • Craft supplies including yarn and a button maker
  • Hands-on building activities like Legos and Brain Flakes
  • Technology-driven tools such as three Cricut machines, a sewing machine, and a laminator
  • 3D printing services with two 3D printers, including the popular Toybox printer, often described as “a toy that prints other toys”

One of the unexpected hits in the Makerspace is the laminator. “Laminating services are not offered in as many places as they used to be… people will come in, ask if we have a laminator, and then they’ll donate funds to the Makerspace after using it,” Le Vey-Rowland noted.

The Makerspace is free to use, ensuring accessibility for all community members. The library has also begun offering group tours and interactive sessions, introducing visitors of all ages to the variety of creative tools available.

The Teen Space: A Dedicated Area for Young Adults

Understanding the importance of providing a comfortable and welcoming environment for teens, Le Vey-Rowland repurposed the library’s former Story Time area into a dedicated teen space. “Many of our teens would sort of squirrel themselves in the back of the library and sit on the floor, and I didn’t think that was fair. I felt like they needed their own space,” she explained.

The teen area now features:

  • A table and chairs
  • Comfortable window seating for reading and homework
  • A dedicated collection of YA fiction, YA non-fiction, and graphic novels
  • Board games that can be checked out or played in-house, as part of MADL’s “Library of Things”

The library’s Dungeons & Dragons program, held bi-weekly, has been a hit among teens, so much so that there is now a waitlist for participation. “We have one dungeon master, and it has been incredibly popular,” Le Vey-Rowland said. “It’s not just a game; it teaches socialization, improv skills, and even math.”

Story Time and Early Learning Opportunities

Story Time remains a core part of the Montague Library’s programming. “We do Story Time on Tuesdays at 11:15,” Le Vey-Rowland confirmed. “Unless a garbage truck comes by, then I’m old news!”, Le Vey-Rowland joked.

Story Time not only engages children in early literacy activities but also provides an opportunity for families to connect with the library at an early age. Additionally, the library supports young learners by offering library cards to Montague school students, even if they reside in Oceana County, through a student non-resident card program.

The Montague Branch is also home to Storyville, an interactive early literacy center designed to encourage children to explore and learn through play. Storyville offers a variety of themed, hands-on learning environments that engage young minds and support early childhood development. This immersive space fosters a love for reading and discovery, making it a valuable resource for families with young children.

Expanding Library Services and Digital Resources

For those who prefer digital reading, the Montague Library provides access to Libby and Hoopla:

  • Libby functions like a digital library, where some books may have waitlists but allow for borrowing flexibility.
  • Hoopla offers instant access to books, magazines, movies, and TV shows with no wait times, though it has a monthly checkout limit.

“It’s one of the great debates—digital vs. physical books. Some people love holding a book in their hands, while others love the convenience of carrying 10 books on their Kindle,” Le Vey-Rowland observed.

Exciting Future Plans and Community Engagement

The Montague Library is continually growing and evolving to meet the needs of the community. Some of the upcoming projects include:

  • A new Toybox 3D printer, generously funded by the Friends of the Montague Library
  • Revitalizing programs that utilize the Makerspace, such as the popular “Build a Car and Race” event (photos below)
  • Expanding school outreach, to foster library engagement among students
  • A community seed library where visitors can exchange seeds and learn about gardening
  • Annual Summer Reading Program, featuring performers, animals, and indoor “camping” activities for children, as well as an adult summer reading challenge with prizes such as car wash coupons and coffee

“We strive to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We love our patrons, and we want them to love their library,” Le Vey-Rowland said.

Supporting the Library: The Friends of the Montague Library

The Friends of the Montague Library play an integral role in funding programs and resources. This community group runs the Itty Bitty Bookstore in Montague and hosts events such as the upcoming Book Sale on March 22. They welcome new volunteers and donations, ensuring the library remains a thriving resource for the town.
