In the heart of downtown Whitehall, Michigan, a storied bank building has found new life as Fetch Brewing Company. Co-founded by Dan and Jen Hain in 2014, this beloved brewery has quickly become a focal point for craft beer enthusiasts and community members alike.
Historic Roots Along White Lake
Whitehall and neighboring Montague, founded in Muskegon County in the mid-1800s, sit near the shores of Lake Michigan and hug the banks of White Lake, the mouth of the White River. As the lumber business boomed in the region, the growing towns began taking shape, eventually attracting the commercial endeavors that gave rise to this building’s creation.
The Building’s Evolution
Built in 1912 on a prominent corner of Colby Street—Whitehall’s main thoroughfare—the structure originally served as the State Bank. According to historical accounts, “no expense was spared” in its construction, making it a point of pride for the entire community. Family names listed in the bank’s articles of incorporation can still be found on local buildings and street signs today.
When the bank relocated kitty-corner to a new location in 1965, the original building stood vacant for several years. Eventually, a local gentleman purchased it, transforming part of the upstairs into a private apartment while running an antique store on the main level. Evidence of his modifications remains: look for the red cedar bolts jutting out from the brick walls, once used to support a catwalk around the upper interior.
After he moved out in the mid-1980s, the building again sat empty. Whitehall native (and future Fetch co-owner) Dan Hain recalls feeling disheartened each time he passed by the boarded-up edifice. A subsequent owner gutted parts of the interior, adding some outdoor décor. Later, Chuck and Luann Schwartz purchased the building with the initial idea of starting a brewery themselves. Realizing the logistical challenges while working full-time in Chicago, they opted to wait until the right owners came along.

Meet the Founders
That opportunity arose in 2014, when Dan and his wife, Jen—longtime residents with a passion for craft beer—stepped in. Dan had been homebrewing for nearly 20 years, experimenting with recipes and mastering the craft. Jen, who grew up in nearby Montague, shared his enthusiasm for bringing a brewery to Whitehall. When the State Bank building became available, they saw a chance to preserve a key piece of the town’s history while introducing a fresh, community-focused business model.
Crafting the Beers
At Fetch, variety is the name of the game. Dan loves to experiment, and the tap list constantly rotates to keep things fresh:
- Angry Sky – A brewery favorite that Dan and Jen often sip themselves.
- Smolder (Chipotle Porter) – A smoky, spicy brew that sparks a love-it-or-hate-it reaction.
- Distracted – Named with a wink at Dan’s tendency to juggle multiple ideas at once.
- Wet Suit and Imperial Starship – Additional fan favorites showcasing Dan’s range.
Because Dan brews based on what the community enjoys most, there is always something new on tap.
More Than a Brewery
Beyond its beer selection, Fetch Brewing Company serves as a community cornerstone:
- Gathering Spot: Locals often refer to themselves as part of the “Fetch Family,” pointing to new friendships formed over pints.
- Multi-Purpose Venue: From weddings and baby showers to fundraisers, trivia nights, and more, the brewery has become a go-to location for celebrations and gatherings.
- Activity Groups: A Fetch Cycling Group, a Fetch Running Group, and even a former Fetch Knitting Group illustrate how Dan and Jen support unique interests and foster social bonds.

Historic Meets Modern
Inside, the unmistakable bank vault still anchors the space, offering a glimpse of the building’s early 20th-century heritage. Modern brewing equipment and inviting décor mingle with exposed brick and original architectural details, blending old and new in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Whether you’re perched at the bar, chatting near the vault, or enjoying the outdoor patio with and without music, you’ll feel the building’s storied past living comfortably alongside its new purpose.
A Bright Future
By breathing fresh life into an iconic structure on Colby Street, Dan and Jen have created a brewery that stands as both a testament to Whitehall’s past and a beacon for its future. Fetch Brewing Company continues to delight visitors with rotating craft beers, friendly service, and a genuine sense of camaraderie. If you find yourself in Whitehall—craving a taste of local history and inventive brews—be sure to stop by the old State Bank building on Colby Street. You might just discover your new favorite beer, a warm community vibe, and a chance to be part of the ever-growing Fetch Family.
