If you have ever seen flyers for a “Rotary Pancake Breakfast” or “Night on the Town” and thought Wait, what is Rotary anyway? you are not alone. Many know the name but do not grasp what Rotary does. The truth is, the Montague-Whitehall Rotary has quietly reshaped life around White Lake for decades. Once you look closely, their impact is everywhere.
Projects That Shape Our Everyday Life
The Montague-Whitehall Rotary is not just about meetings. It is about visible, lasting change. Key highlights include:

Montague Bandshell. The stage that hosts the free summer concert series, running eight consecutive Tuesdays each year.
Ice Rink Warming Shelter and Gazebo in Montague. A cozy addition that keeps skaters smiling when winter winds blow.
Splash Pad Bench and Umbrella in Whitehall. A shaded resting place for parents while kids splash the day away.
Outdoor Gas Fireplace at the Whitehall Promenade. A seasonal gathering spot for friendly conversation against lake views.
Kiosk at Duck Creek Nature Preserve. A welcome guidepost for nature lovers exploring the preserve.

Each of these projects may seem small, but together, they knit stronger community bonds and elevate our sense of belonging.
Lighting the Future, One Scholar at a Time
When people ask, What is Rotary? the answer starts with people.
In 2025, the club awarded six local high school graduates, three from Whitehall High School and three from Montague High School, with $1,000 scholarships each. That totaled $6,000 invested in education and leadership.
Since 2020, Rotary has contributed more than $25,000 in scholarships to help young people chase their dreams. These awards recognize not just academic success but also leadership and service.
The scholarships are funded by Rotary’s signature community events such as Night on the Town, No More Bull Raffle, Annual Pancake Breakfast, and Bacon, Bloodies and Brews. These fun, neighborly gatherings translate directly into opportunity for students.
Dollars That Make a Difference
The Montague-Whitehall Rotary’s impact shows up clearly in its giving:
$10,000 donated to Montague for a new concession and warming building at Buttermilk Creek Park.
$10,000 donated to Whitehall for the outdoor gas fire pit project at the North Mears Avenue parking lot.
$25,000 invested in scholarships for students since 2020.
IRS filings reflect nearly $20,000 in annual giving and almost $50,000 in assets, ensuring the club’s ability to keep investing in community needs.
These numbers prove that Rotary is not just about good intentions. It is about measurable, financial impact that strengthens both people and places.
Building Global Citizens: Rotary Youth Exchange
Another way the Montague-Whitehall Rotary invests in young people is through the Rotary Youth Exchange. This program allows local students to spend a year abroad while welcoming students from around the world into our community.
Through Youth Exchange, high school students learn new languages, experience other cultures firsthand, and form lifelong friendships across borders. At the same time, families in White Lake host international students, giving our small-town community a global connection right at home.
The program builds confidence, broadens perspectives, and fosters leadership in ways that textbooks alone never could. For many students, it is a life-changing opportunity that shapes their future in profound ways.
Community Togetherness
Rotary does not only build things. It also builds community spirit.
Night on the Town. The club’s largest fundraiser, held at The Playhouse at White Lake, combines concerts, raffles, dinner, and fellowship. A single raffle at this event includes seven prizes, with a top prize of $1,000.
Annual Pancake Breakfast. A beloved springtime tradition at Whitehall High School, paired with the White Lake Business Expo, where neighbors enjoy food, fun, and connection.
Events like these fund the work, but they also embody what Rotary stands for: fellowship with a purpose.

Why Rotary Matters in a Small Town
So back to the question: Wait, what is Rotary? Here is how it plays out in Montague and Whitehall:
It connects people. Around 55 local business and community leaders meet weekly for lunch at the Viking Athletic Center in Whitehall.
It builds pride. From benches to bandshells, Rotary projects enrich everyday life in visible ways.
It grows leaders. By recognizing and investing in youth, Rotary shapes the next generation of service-minded leaders.
It links local to global. Alongside local investments, Rotary contributes to worldwide efforts such as polio eradication and clean water access.

Rotary Looking Ahead
Montague-Whitehall Rotary is not a mysterious club. It is neighbors who care, rolling up their sleeves to serve. It is scholarships that launch futures, community projects that leave a lasting mark, and fundraisers that transform fellowship into progress.
So the next time you see the word “Rotary” around town, you will not have to ask, What is Rotary? You will know. It is the heartbeat of service in our community, and it is changing White Lake for the better every single day.every single day.
