MONTAGUE — The Montague community will gather on Friday, Sept. 26, 2025 at Montague High School for the annual Wildcat Salute, a moving pregame ceremony honoring veterans, active-duty military, police, fire, and emergency responders. Gates open at 5:00 p.m.; the ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m. (The Salute takes place before the game.)

From interactive displays beginning at 5:00 p.m. to a Patriot Motorcycle Parade, Hometown Hero recognition, a Quilt of Valor presentation, a POW/MIA remembrance with a moment of silence and “Taps,” and a pregame meet-and-greet where student-athletes thank our honored guests—this night is designed to honor service and build connection. During the game, fans can join a “Minute of Change” fundraiser for a local veterans’ organization, and cheerleaders from both teams will complete 22 pushups to raise awareness of veteran suicide prevention. In appreciation for their service, all current and former military, police, fire, and emergency responders receive free game admission.

A tradition built to connect students and community
Wildcat Salute founder Jacquie Wood says the event grew from a simple but powerful goal: connection.
“I want the community to see what great kids are in our school system, and I want the kids to see the wonderful people all around them,” Wood shared. “I wanted to honor those who greatly deserve it, who work behind the scenes giving their all for this great community.”

Inspired by schools that honor veterans at football games, Wood broadened the vision to include first responders and Hometown Heroes. After consulting with the director of Mona Shores’ Salute, she pitched the idea to Montague High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Jay Mulder and Montague Superintendent Jeff Johnson—“both responded with a resounding YES!” She also credits SSG Joel Parham of the local National Guard and Gloria Hess of the VFW for invaluable support.
This year’s Hometown Heroes are Wanda Lee Suits and Arland Cederquist, celebrated for their decades of service to Montague and its schools. Wood treasures many memories from past ceremonies, including honoring Jack Woller, a Montague graduate who died in the Vietnam conflict. After Woller’s mother shared his story, Coach Mulder located an old football for the team to sign; the captain presented it to Woller’s family—“a healing moment,” Wood said. Last year, 92-year-old Wayne Schneider thrilled the crowd with the coin toss.
Weather permitting, organizers hope to bring back the Hooligan Flight Team flyover with a ball parachuting down to the field—another crowd favorite that underscores the night’s pageantry and gratitude.

What moves Wood most, year after year, is the human connection on the field:
“When the football teams and cheerleaders shake hands with our special guests—to see the respect shown—it brings tears to my eyes every time. Maybe this made a difference in the lives of those who participated… and really that is what it is all about: bringing our community together in unity.”
