C’s Extreme Ice Cream & Mini Golf Brings Community Together

For Traci Murphy, owning C’s Extreme Ice Cream & Mini Golf was never part of a business plan. It started as a casual conversation years ago while visiting the longtime Montague favorite with her family.

Now, that conversation has turned into one of the community’s most recognizable summer destinations.

Located at 8990 Water St. in Montague, C’s Extreme Ice Cream & Mini Golf will officially open for the 2026 season on May 13, welcoming families, cyclists, golfers, and ice cream lovers back for another summer of sweet treats and memories.

Murphy said the story behind becoming owner still feels surreal.

More than 20 years ago, while visiting what was then owned by Cheryl Smith and her family, Murphy jokingly mentioned that if Smith ever decided to sell the business, she would be interested. Years later, during opening season in 2021, Smith remembered that conversation and approached Murphy about taking over the business.

Murphy said she was shocked Smith had remembered.

“She knew that I would keep it a fun family friendly destination for everyone,” Murphy shared.

That vision has remained at the center of the business ever since.

While mini golf continues to bring in plenty of visitors, Murphy said many people are surprised to discover C’s also offers a full ice cream and food menu. Its location near the bike trail has also made it a popular stop for families and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the area.

One of the first things customers notice when they walk inside is the smell of fresh homemade waffle cones.

Murphy said the homemade waffle cones and waffle bowls used for the shop’s extreme sundaes are among the most popular menu items. She also recommends her personal favorite, an old fashioned chocolate banana malt.

Beyond desserts, C’s has built a loyal following for several savory menu options as well, including chili cheese dogs and pulled pork sandwiches.

The business has also developed traditions that regular customers look forward to every summer.

Favorites like the Duck Lake Freeze and fish bowls have become staples, while the Friday Flavor of the Week keeps customers guessing with rotating hand scoop flavors ranging from nostalgic classics to colorful specialty creations selected by the scoop staff themselves.

Murphy said creating a fun atmosphere is one of the most important parts of the experience.

That includes monthly Glow Golf events during the summer. Played at dusk with LED golf balls and glow sticks, the themed evenings turn the mini golf course into a glowing family event filled with laughter and friendly competition.

Murphy encourages families to watch social media for upcoming Glow Golf dates and additional summer events planned throughout the season.

One tradition that especially stands out to Murphy is a journal she introduced during her first year as owner. Employees use it to write about funny, memorable, and even difficult moments from each season.

Murphy said reading through those entries at the end of the year has become one of her favorite traditions.

She also credits much of the business’s atmosphere to the staff.

“I have the best team that I work with,” Murphy said. “These girls are just fun, happy, enjoyable to be around, make the customers feel welcomed and make sure they have exactly what they want.”

For Murphy, being part of the Montague community carries special meaning because it is where she grew up.

She said the close knit nature of Montague and Whitehall is what makes the area special, pointing to neighbors supporting one another and the strong sense of connection throughout the community.

“Everyone knows each other, people are always there to help one another,” Murphy said. “That is what a community is all about.”
