Local Authors Invite Community to Share Stories for White Lake History Book

Whitehall, Michigan — Authors Tanya Cabala and Dr. Rick Rediske are inviting residents, former residents, and others connected to the White Lake area to share their stories, memories, or reflections for inclusion in their upcoming book, White Lake: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of White Lake the Beautiful.

The book tells the full story of White Lake, from its Indigenous roots and early settlement through the lumbering and industrial years, the time of pollution and decline, the long community fight for restoration, and the stewardship that continues today. It combines history, science, and personal voices to show how deeply people have been connected to the lake across generations.

“We want this to be a book that reflects the full human story of White Lake,” Cabala said. “Not just the years of cleanup, but all the people who lived beside it, worked around it, and cared for it through changing times.”

Cabala and Rediske are especially interested in short quotes, memories, or stories about:
• Indigenous history and early settlement
• Industry and working life around the lake
• Early environmental awareness and pollution concerns
• The cleanup and restoration years
• White Lake today and hopes for its future

Contributors are encouraged to write just a few sentences or a short paragraph. Those who prefer to speak rather than write can contact the authors to share their stories by phone. Photos related to White Lake’s history are also welcome.

“We’re grateful to everyone who helps tell this story,” Rediske said. “White Lake’s recovery is remarkable, but it’s also part of a much longer history that deserves to be remembered and shared.”

An outline of the book’s chapters is available to help people see where their stories might fit.
