The following information was provided by Montague Township as part of their Summer 2025 updates. It includes important details about road work, summer millages, senior services, and how you can help shape the future of local parks and recreation.
ROADS
Muskegon County Road Commission (MCRC) is responsible for all roads in the Township. For any major work, they require the Township to share costs. This spring, the Township had Henderson Road repaved, and the Township’s share of the cost was $95,000. The Township has limited funds for road work, and we try to have a project each year. Next fiscal year we will have Walsh Road chip-sealed, which adds 7 or more years of life to the road. There are many factors involved in deciding which roads to work on and MCRC usually makes these suggestions. However, we are interested in hearing from residents which roads they feel need to be worked on.
SUMMER MILLAGES
Our summer tax bill is the smaller of the two yearly bills that go out. On this bill are SET and County Operations millages.
SET—State Education Tax, is deposited to the State School Aid Fund for distribution to Michigan Public K–12 schools. This tax makes up about 15% of total school aid fund and is separate from any local school bond, college or voted mill issue.
County Operations stay in Muskegon County. These are spent on everything that supports county operations. The County Operating dollars are the building blocks of the County budget. So, all general fund departments utilize county operation funds. These departments include, but are not limited to, The Treasurer’s office, Sheriff, District Court, Probate Court, Equalization, Register of Deeds, etc.
