Press Release: White Lake Area Historical Society

White Lake Area Historical Society Announces September 18 Program:
“Victory Over Japan Day” Presentation by Dr. James Husiak

The White Lake Area Historical Society invites the public to its September meeting on Thursday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the Senior Center on Ferry Street, Montague. Members and guests are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

The featured program, “Victory Over Japan Day”, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, will be presented by Dr. James Husiak, whose rich educational and professional background brings depth and authority to this important historical topic. He is an engaging, knowledgeable speaker and will provide well-researched handouts based on his presentation.

Dr. Husiak has degrees in biology, history, secondary education and dentistry. He began his career teaching high school biology, then practiced dentistry from 1981 until his retirement in 2020 in the White Lake area, where he now lives.

This multi-media presentation will include audio, visuals, and a PowerPoint timeline of events leading up to, during, and following World War II’s conclusion in the Pacific. Dr. Husiak will address compelling questions, never answered in high school history, such as:

  • How did we get to Victory Over Japan Day?
  • Where did the phrase “Death Before Dishonor” originate?
  • What about “Tora! Tora! Tora!”
  • What was the human and material cost to Japan and the United States—military and civilian?
  • How did broken codes shape the war?

Bring Your Questions. The program encourages audience participation, giving attendees the opportunity to explore these and other questions in detail.
