White Lake History – Bridging White Lake

Origins and Early Bridge

In the mid‑1800s, White Lake connected Montague and Whitehall to Lake Michigan via a narrow natural channel. Settlers and traders floated lumber through that channel, a slow and inefficient process that led local leaders to push for improvements. Federal funding in the 1860s backed dredging and navigational enhancements. By 1866–1867, construction began to deepen the channel and build harbor structures to support shipping.

The Causeway Takes Shape

By the early 1920s, automobile tourism along Lake Michigan sparked a demand for connected scenic roads. In 1924, state and local funds paid for a camel-backed bridge linking Montague and Whitehall, forming what became the White Lake Causeway. The causeway became part of the West Michigan Scenic Drive and later Business U.S. 31, offering a direct, paved route between both downtowns.

Industrial and Economic Importance

Whitehall and Montague once hosted multiple sawmills—including Ferry-Dowling (Montague) and Staples‑Covell (Whitehall)—that shipped timber across White Lake. The causeway allowed trucks and early motor vehicles to transport lumber, ice, and goods between the mills, rail lines, and the lakefront efficiently.

Later Evolution and Legacy

Over the decades the original wood or steel bridge was replaced with concrete and asphalt. This modern causeway now accommodates vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. Adjacent to the causeway, a former railroad trestle has been converted into a rail-trail bridge—now part of the Hart‑Montague Trail connecting both cities.
