White Lake History – Downtown History Journey

1920s: Cars and the Causeway

The 1920s transformed both downtowns as cars took over travel. The West Michigan Pike cut through the towns, bringing tourists quickly. Soon, the camel-back causeway replaced the old swing bridge, linking Montague and Whitehall with a strong road connection. With cars came new diners, motels, and shops, which changed the way downtown businesses worked.

1940s–1960s: Industry and Community

During the 1940s to 1960s, industry powered the area. Whitehall thrived with Michigan Tanning Company and later Howmet jobs supporting local families. Montague added its own foundry and factories, keeping the business core alive. At the same time, tourism stayed steady with summer shops and restaurants. Families filled downtown streets after long workdays, creating a lively balance between industry and leisure.

1970s–1990s: Preservation and New Identity

The 1970s to 1990s brought new pride in history. The White River Light Station became a museum, protecting the harbor story. Montague added the world’s largest working weathervane, celebrating the schooner Ella Ellenwood. The Hart–Montague Trail opened, guiding bikers right into downtown shops and cafes. These changes gave the towns a new identity while keeping traditions alive.

2000s–Present: Blending Past and Present

Modern Whitehall and Montague downtowns mix history with fresh attractions. The Playhouse at White Lake remains a cultural gem. Annual events like Cruz’in and the White Lake Maritime Festival bring people back each summer. Downtowns now offer galleries, boutiques, and parks beside their historic sites. Together, the towns keep growing while celebrating the long journey from 1920 to today.
