This next feature creature is a rare and elegant nomad of the scorching hot 🥵 Sahara. Among the largest of its kind amongst the hoofed animal family tree 🌳 ; they’re recognized by their long legs 🦵 , reddish-brown and white coats, and lyre-shaped horns. A highly adaptable migratory ; able to survive on minimal water 💦 thanks to the food they eat. there are around less than 400 left in the wild of this amazing creature due to serious threats like habitat loss, climate change 🥵 and hunting. many zoos and wildlife sanctuaries are trying to help and boost their population; while desert nomads and pastoralists have given us what most info we have out in the field.

This weeks feature creature is the Dama or Addra Gazelle

1. Measuring at 3 to 4 ft tall, 4.5 to 5.5 ft long, and weighing 77 to 165 lbs ; the Dama Gazelle is the Largest species of Gazelle in the world 🌍 . Gazelles are notable for being smaller and more slender with a lighter build than antelopes, which gives gazelles more speed and agility. In Chad 🇹🇩 , the dama gazelle is a symbol of beauty and elegance.

2. Mainly living in herds of 5 to 20 with one dominant male; they travel constantly to find food and water. But they can get most of the water 💦 they need to survive from the plants 🌱 . They primarily eat leaves 🍃 , shoots, shrubs, and grasses, often standing on their hind legs to reach 6ft high vegetation such as acacia leaves 🍂

3. Their mostly lightly colored short hair coats helps reflect sunlight and keeps them cool 😎 since they’re diurnal unlike most desert 🏜️ animals; along with Their long legs help provide extra surface area to help dissipate heat in their hot 🥵 desert 🏜️ environment.

4. The dama gazelle makes a ‘honking’ sound when alarmed 😱. They are also known for their “pronking” behavior, where they jump with stiffened limbs to warn others of danger ⚠️ such as predators such as jackals , caracals , cheetahs 🐆, hyenas, leopards 🐆, and Lions 🦁

5. Dama gazelles can run at speeds of 35 mph

6. Males guard territories to help keep other males out during the mating season; marking it with their urine; piles of poo 💩, and special scent markers that come out from glands near their eyes 👀

7. After a pregnancy of 5 to 6 months ; females gives birth to 1 calf, although twins may occasionally occur. Calves are weaned at an age of 3 to 4 months. It only takes a few days for a calf to be strong 💪 enough to keep up with the herd, and a week to be able to run 🏃 as fast an adult!

8. Young dama gazelles have a reddish-brown back with white underparts, which changes to a mainly white coat with a reddish-brown head and neck as they get older.
