Whitehall, MI — April 2026 —
The public is invited to attend the White Lake Area Historical Society 2026 season opener on Thursday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the White Lake Senior Center across from the Book Nook on Ferry Street in Montague.
Keeping with a long-standing tradition, several students from the Whitehall National History Day (NHD) Team will present entries that they have been researching since last November. NHD is a program for students in grades 3-12 that encourages students to conduct extensive research on a topic of their choice, analyze the information, and show the topic’s impact over time. Projects include entries in every category: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, and website.
This year’s theme is Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History, chosen in recognition of the country’s 250th anniversary. There is something for everyone.
Topics for the twelve state qualifying entries range from revolutionary concepts in science, medicine, women’s rights, the Establishment Clause, the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong, and labor rights, to the invention of the three-point seat belt, as well as reactions to events like Pearl Harbor, the British tea tax, and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Each looks at how society was reformed.
The 18 qualifying students will represent the White Lake area at the Michigan History Day state contest, which will be held on April 25 at Saginaw Valley State University. Top entries there will advance to the NHD National Contest in June.
Admission is free. We hope you will join us and these young historians.
Those attending the meeting are encouraged to support the Senior Center by bringing donations of paper products: paper towels, toilet paper or napkins.
