Pancakes With a Purpose: Rotary Breakfast Returns March 21

For many in the White Lake area, the Montague-Whitehall Rotary Pancake Breakfast is more than a meal. It’s a tradition that reflects something deeper about the community — neighbors showing up for each other.

On Saturday, March 21, residents from across the White Lake area will gather at Whitehall High School from 7:30 a.m. to noon for the annual Montague-Whitehall Rotary Pancake Breakfast, held alongside the White Lake Community Business Expo. While the pancakes draw people in, the event’s real impact extends far beyond the breakfast table.

Every ticket sold helps fund scholarships, youth leadership programs, and service initiatives that benefit both the local community and people around the world.

“It is more than just breakfast,” said Brent Raeth, president of the Montague-Whitehall Rotary Club. “It is neighbors connecting, families gathering, and local organizations working side by side to support causes that matter.”

A Tradition That Fuels Community Impact

The pancake breakfast has become one of the White Lake area’s long-standing community traditions, but its purpose continues to evolve.

Funds raised from the event help support student scholarships, youth leadership programs, and community initiatives throughout the White Lake area. Rotary also participates in global efforts focused on clean drinking water, education initiatives, and the ongoing international campaign to eradicate polio.

While the heart of the event has always been service, Raeth said the scope of its impact has expanded over time.

“The core purpose has always been service,” he said. “But the impact has grown significantly as we continue looking for opportunities to invest in leadership, opportunity, and service both locally and globally.”

A Community Effort Behind the Scenes

The breakfast may feel simple for attendees, but it takes a coordinated community effort to make it happen.

Rotary members work alongside students, community leaders, and volunteers who help cook, serve, organize, and welcome guests throughout the morning. Local businesses also play a critical role through sponsorships, donations, and volunteer support.

“Local businesses are essential to the success of the Pancake Breakfast,” Raeth said. “Their support allows us to maximize the funds that go directly toward community and global service projects.”

For those interested in helping, Rotary welcomes additional volunteers from the community.

“Volunteers are the backbone of the Pancake Breakfast,” Raeth said. “Whether someone volunteers their time, attends the event, or helps sponsor it, every contribution makes a difference.”

More Than Pancakes

While pancakes remain the centerpiece of the event, this year’s breakfast will feature a special addition: blueberry pancakes made with blueberries donated by Peterson Farms.

The goal, Raeth said, is simple: great food, great people, and a welcoming environment where the community can connect.

For those who have never attended, the event also offers something extra. Because it takes place alongside the White Lake Community Business Expo, visitors can enjoy breakfast and then explore booths featuring local businesses and organizations.

“It’s a chance to connect with neighbors, support important causes, and be part of a long-standing White Lake tradition,” Raeth said.

Living Out “Service Above Self”

At the center of the Rotary Club’s work is its guiding principle: Service Above Self.

The pancake breakfast brings that idea to life through volunteers giving their time, businesses offering support, and families gathering to support causes larger than themselves.

“Our message is simple,” Raeth said. “Come be part of something meaningful. When people come together with a spirit of service, incredible things can happen.”
