This week’s Trivia Tuesday asked a simple question: in what year did the Montague Farmers Market officially open?
The answer is 1998.
But the real story is not just about the year.
It is about how close the market came to not happening at all—and how a delayed project turned into a lasting part of the community.
An Idea Takes Root
Today, the Montague Farmers Market is a familiar part of summer in the White Lake area. But before it became a weekly tradition, it was an idea that nearly didn’t happen.
City leaders first set their sights on bringing a farmers market to downtown Montague in 1997. The plan called for a modest, eight-stall market on Church Street, designed to give local farmers and vendors a dedicated space while helping spark new life in the surrounding area.
At the time, the market was just one piece of a larger downtown improvement effort. The Church and Ferry Street area was largely undeveloped, and officials hoped the market could serve as an anchor—drawing people in and encouraging future growth.
A Costly Setback
But the project quickly hit a major obstacle.
When construction bids came in, they were far higher than expected. What was intended to be a relatively simple project suddenly became too expensive to move forward as planned. Rather than abandon the idea, the city chose to delay it, regroup, and rethink the approach.
Back on Track
That decision proved to be the turning point.
By early 1998, the plan was back on track. City officials scaled the project to make it more manageable and moved forward with updated bids. With construction underway that spring, the long-awaited market was finally within reach.
Opening Day Arrives
In July 1998, the Montague Farmers Market officially opened on Church Street.
The response was immediate. On opening day, vendors saw strong turnout, with many selling out of their products early. What had once been a question mark for the community quickly showed signs of becoming something much bigger.
A Lasting Tradition
What started as a small, eight-stall market has since grown into a lasting part of Montague’s identity. While the market has evolved over the years, its original purpose remains the same—supporting local farmers, bringing people together, and creating a space where the community can connect.
And it all traces back to a project that, at one point, almost didn’t make it past the planning stage.
