White Lake Bike Program: Building a Pedal-Friendly Montague

The City of Montague continues to build momentum with the White Lake Bike Program, an initiative that provides free bicycles for residents and visitors to enjoy around town.

Why the Program Exists

The program was developed to offer an alternative mode of transportation that is both practical and community-minded. By making bicycles available at no cost, the City hopes to:

  • Encourage healthy activity and outdoor recreation.
  • Provide a budget-friendly option that saves on fuel.
  • Strengthen Montague’s identity as a pedestrian- and bike-friendly community.

As City Clerk and Market Manager Kelly Markley explains, the program is about “creating a unique, welcoming environment where people can enjoy the ease of biking around downtown and beyond.”

How It Works

The program is designed for simplicity and accessibility:

  • Bike Racks: A minimum of six racks are located downtown, with plans to add more as the program expands. Each rack holds at least two bicycles and three helmets.
  • Maps and Signage: Each rack includes program signage, brochures, and maps of all bike rack locations.
  • Identification: Bikes and helmets are clearly marked with “White Lake Bike Program” stickers.

Anyone can borrow a bike for the day, enjoy their ride, and return it to a rack when finished.

Care and Maintenance

The City regularly inspects bicycles and helmets to ensure safety. Bikes found outside designated racks are checked before being returned to circulation, and maintenance records are carefully tracked.

The Montague Police Department assists by collecting abandoned or damaged bikes, while the Muskegon County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) helps with repairs through trained technicians.

Community Support

Local businesses and organizations can participate as program partners by donating funds, bicycles, or materials. In return, they receive recognition in program materials and may host bike racks near their locations.

Donations of working bicycles are currently being accepted.

A Community-Minded Program

City Manager Jeff Auch notes that the program’s history is rooted in Montague’s values: promoting wellness, encouraging sustainability, and providing a welcoming environment for visitors.

The White Lake Bike Program isn’t just about getting from place to place — it’s about strengthening community connections, supporting active lifestyles, and enhancing the charm of Montague.

Get Involved

The White Lake Bike Program thrives on community support. Here’s how you can help:
