WHITEHALL — The Whitehall District Schools Board of Education approved the district’s 2026-27 budget and completed Superintendent C.J. Van Wieren’s annual evaluation during its June 15 meeting. The board also approved a new bargaining agreement with the Whitehall Educational Support Personnel Association (WESPA).
Budget adopted for upcoming school year
The meeting began with a public hearing on the district’s proposed 2026-27 budget before trustees unanimously approved the spending plan later in the evening. During the budget presentation, district officials reported an estimated enrollment of 1,837 students and projected a general fund balance of approximately $6.3 million, representing about 20.3% of expenditures.
Business officials noted that the district continues to navigate uncertainty surrounding the state budget process, which had not yet been finalized. The budget also reflects the loss of several one-time federal funding sources that had supported district operations in recent years.
Following the hearing, the board unanimously adopted the 2026-27 Whitehall District Schools General Appropriations Act resolution.
Public comments focus on LifeWise Academy
Two community members spoke during public comment regarding LifeWise Academy, a program that provides off-site religious instruction during the school day.
Both speakers expressed opposition to the program and urged the district to limit its presence in public schools. Concerns raised included the use of instructional time and the influence of outside organizations on students.
Later in the meeting, another community member spoke in support of the program, noting that participation is voluntary and permitted under Michigan law.
Superintendent receives effective rating
Trustees unanimously approved an evaluation rating of “Effective” for Superintendent C.J. Van Wieren for the 2025-26 school year.
Board Vice President Christopher Mahoney explained that board members complete specialized training before participating in superintendent evaluations and meet throughout the year to monitor progress and performance.
During public comment, a community member praised Van Wieren’s leadership, citing his impact on district operations, community relations and student success.
WESPA agreement approved
The board also unanimously approved a new bargaining agreement with WESPA, which represents support staff within the district. Trustees approved the agreement without discussion.
FFA convention experience highlighted
During discussion of the consent agenda, Trustee James TenBrink shared comments about the value of Future Farmers of America conventions for students.
Drawing from his own experience attending state and national conventions, TenBrink said the events provide students with opportunities to build lasting friendships and connections with peers from across Michigan and beyond.
Summer activities underway
In his superintendent’s report, Van Wieren said district buildings have been quieter since the end of the school year, but numerous summer activities are keeping facilities busy.
Among the programs taking place are youth camps, summer junior varsity basketball leagues, volleyball camps and band activities. Van Wieren said it is encouraging to see students continuing to use district facilities throughout the summer.
Van Wieren also reported that the district has one teaching position currently open and recently filled its band director position. The new director is a recent Central Michigan University graduate from Granville who chose Whitehall over another job offer. He said the district is excited to continue growing its band program under the new leadership.
The board adjourned following final public comment.
The next meeting will be held on July 20.
