August 14, 2025 – Whitehall Township
The Whitehall Township Board held a special meeting Wednesday afternoon, August 14, 2025, called so at the request of the Township Treasurer Madge Kraai, to address a single agenda item: her resignation.
Treasurer Cites Lack of Transparency
During the meeting, Kraai formally announced she would resign effective September 18, 2025, allowing time to finish tax work and help transition duties to her successor. In an emotional statement, she explained that her decision stemmed from what she described as a breakdown in communication and transparency within the township office.
“I believe in transparency at all times,” Kraai told the board, emphasizing the importance of open workshops and inclusive discussions. She said she no longer feels her voice is valued or heard, and therefore could not continue to serve.
Incident Over Salary Split Sparks Frustration
Kraai recounted a specific incident on August 6 that she said became the “final straw.” She explained that the township attorney, Rachel Novak, called her to say that the salary split between herself and her deputy was allegedly being handled illegally and needed correction.
According to Kraai, she and her deputy had already researched the arrangement, consulted the Michigan Township Association for guidance, and followed a structured process in good faith. She expressed frustration that the attorney’s research was requested—allegedly by the township supervisor—without her knowledge, input, or opportunity to provide documentation.
She also questioned why taxpayer money was spent on legal research for an issue she believes could have been resolved internally, noting that the information the attorney provided matched materials she and her deputy already had on hand.
Board Accepts Resignation
Board members discussed the timing of Kraai’s departure and confirmed that her resignation could be accepted immediately, with her service continuing until her stated end date of September 18. The treasurer also reminded the board to ensure that her signature authority on township checks is replaced promptly to avoid issues after her departure.
The motion to accept her resignation passed unanimously.
Public Service and Principles
In her closing remarks, Kraai reiterated her commitment to fiscal responsibility and public trust. She stressed that township officials must operate with “transparency, mutual respect, and proper procedure”, warning that anything less jeopardizes the trust of the residents they serve.
Her resignation and accompanying statement will be attached to the official meeting minutes.
