Walk the Beat: A Day of Music & Community

There are plenty of places to hear live music in the summer.

But there aren’t many places where every song helps a student learn an instrument.

Where local businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, musicians, and families all play a role in creating something bigger than themselves.

Or where you can spend an afternoon wandering downtown, discovering new artists around every corner, knowing that the event is completely free.

That is what has made Walk the Beat White Lake Area more than just another summer festival.

The Walk the Beat information booth, pictured during the 2025 festival, serves as a hub for maps, merchandise, and event information.

On Saturday, July 18, the fifth annual Walk the Beat returns to downtown Whitehall and Montague, bringing 26 musical acts to 13 venues from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Visitors are invited to stroll from performance to performance, enjoy food trucks, enter free door prize drawings, and experience an afternoon that celebrates not only music, but the community that makes it possible.

Every Performance Gives Back

While people come for the music, the festival’s impact continues long after the stages are packed away.

Each year, Walk the Beat uses proceeds and community support to invest directly in local music education.

“This March we were able to award $16,000 in scholarships, instruments, band fees, and music lessons to our local music students,” said Festival Director Sara Kane Smart.

That mission is what keeps musicians returning year after year.

“The musicians truly are the heart of Walk the Beat,” Kane Smart said. “While they compete for prize money and the opportunity to gain exposure, that’s not what brings most of them back year after year. They donate their time and talent because they believe in the festival’s mission to make live music accessible to everyone and to help inspire the next generation of musicians.”

Their generosity creates something unique. Thousands of people experience live music at no cost while helping fund opportunities for young musicians throughout the White Lake Area.

A Festival That Strengthens the Community

Walk the Beat touches nearly every corner of the community.

Local businesses welcome visitors throughout the day and often see increased traffic.

Community nonprofits raise money through raffle ticket sales.

Musicians gain exposure while competing for prizes and future performance opportunities.

Volunteers donate their time to make the festival possible.

Families spend an afternoon exploring both Whitehall and Montague together.

“Walk the Beat not only brings a great day of free music to our community, but it builds our community through music,” Kane Smart said.

This year’s competition gives performers even more to play for.

The first place band will receive 18 hours of recording studio time or $1,500 cash, an invitation to perform in the 2027 Arts Council of White Lake Nuveen Summer Concert Series, and the opportunity to perform on a float during the Coast Guard Festival Parade.

New for 2026, the festival is also awarding $750 for second place and $500 for third place.

Festival attendees help decide the winners by voting for their favorite acts.

New Family Experiences This Year

Returning visitors will notice something new in 2026.

Walk the Beat is introducing a dedicated Youth Venue at Covell Park, where young musicians will take center stage.

School of Rock Grand Rapids performs from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by Starchy Rips from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Families can also enjoy an Instrument Petting Zoo, hourly music themed book giveaways for children, and free popcorn.

The additions reflect the festival’s larger mission of inspiring young people to discover music, whether they’re watching a performance or picking up an instrument for the first time.

More Than a Festival

One of the best parts of Walk the Beat is that there is no perfect schedule.

You might walk into a venue planning to stay for one song and end up listening to an entire set.

You might discover a local business you’ve never visited before.

You might find your new favorite band.

Or you might simply spend an afternoon enjoying the atmosphere alongside neighbors and visitors who all came for the same reason.

Kane Smart hopes that’s exactly what people remember.

“Festival goers should appreciate the music and free door prizes but also the coming together of volunteers, musicians, nonprofits, businesses, and families to enjoy this special West Michigan community in which we live and play.”

For those who have never attended, she has a simple invitation.

“Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a first time visitor, Walk the Beat offers a day filled with outstanding live music, family fun, and the chance to experience the welcoming spirit that makes the White Lake Area so special.”

Be Part of the Music

Walk the Beat continues to grow thanks to volunteers, sponsors, musicians, businesses, and community support. Organizers are always looking to expand that network, and anyone interested in volunteering can learn more at walkthebeat.org.
